Suspected Islamic militants shot and killed a Nigerian policeman in Maiduguri, capital of the country’s Borno state, the regional police commissioner said.
“He was on his way home from duty this morning when he was shot dead by two men who had been trailing him on a motorcycle,” Mohammed Abubakar, the state’s police commissioner, said by phone today from the city.
Boko Haram, a militant Islamic group, is suspected of carrying out the killing, he said. The group is also suspected of similar murders in the past, most of which were carried out by gunmen on motorcycles, Abubakar said.
The killing is the latest in a series of violent incidents following a Christmas Eve assault on two churches in Maiduguri and multiple bomb blasts in Jos, capital of the central state of Plateau. At least 86 people were killed in the attacks, the National Emergency Management Agency has said. Jama’atu Ahlus- Sunnah Lidda’Awati Wal Jihad, a Muslim group in Nigeria, has claimed responsibility for both attacks.
Nigeria, Africa’s top oil producer and most populous country, is roughly split between a mainly Muslim north and a predominantly Christian south. Since 1999 it has suffered from outbursts of sectarian violence in which more than 14,000 people have died, according to the Brussels-based International Crisis Group
