Jonathan Forms Anti terrorism Agency

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan yesterday named Ambassador Zakari Ibrahim as Coordinator of Anti-Terrorism Agency, Mr. Kingsley Kuku from Ondo State and former spokesman of Ijaw Youths Congress (IYC) to replace Mr. Timi Alaibe as Special Adviser on Niger Delta Affairs.

In a statement, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Mr. Ima Niboro, said former beauty queen and wife of Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, Bianca, was appointed Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora Affairs.

Also, Oyewole Olugbenga Leke was named Senior Special Assistant, Maritime Services to the President. All the appointments take immediate effect.

At its meeting yesterday in Abuja, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) suspended further award of contracts under the 2010 budget for power generation. It however approved contracts in different sectors worth N27.8 billion.

Power stations being test run now according to the Minister of State for Power, Mr. Nuhu Way, are Alaoji, Sapele and Olorunsogo, which are generating 188 megawatts into the national grid while the transmission station in Kwara State has started wheeling power to parts of the country.

Also, foreign investors are said to be injecting over $5 billion investments in Abuja with the building of 37 storey World Trade Centre, Abuja Boulevard, Film Village, Botanical Garden and $1 billion housing for Africa project among others.

Other major decisions taken by the council are the completion of dams in the northern part of the country to return agriculture to its prime place and ensure food security and the building of National Public Key Directory for the Nigerian immigration, which will interface e-passport data from the 36 states of the federation to the World Centre in Singapore.

After the meeting, Minister for Information and Communication, Mr. Labaran Maku flanked by Ministers of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Bala Mohammed, Interior’s Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho and Minister of Finance Olusegun Aganga, briefed journalists on issues discussed at the parley.

Aganga spoke on the successes his team recorded with the offering of the 500 million Eurobond which was oversubscribed by 2.6 per cent and its attendant gains for cheap finance for Nigerians in business. Mohammed dwelt on the approval of three solid waste transfer stations in Mpape, Apo and Kubwa.

Contracts approved yesterday by FEC included the building of three waste transfer stations at Mpape, Apo and Kubwa awarded to Messrs Goodness International Resources Ltd for N2,957, 572,096.35 with completion period of 12 months.

The N6,664,244,869.17 contract for phase II to provide primary engineering infrastructure to Mbora district which covers 634 hectares and where private developers had gone far in providing houses but without a corresponding provision of infrastructure was awarded to Messrs Sammya Nigeria Limited to be completed in 36 months.

The reconstruction of Lower Usman Dam and Gurara Dam was awarded to S.C.C. Nigeria Limited for N13,840,383,768.75.

The council also approved the purchase of five fire fighting trucks Mercedes Benz 1518 model to Messrs Cospam Nigeria Limited for N195,825,000. The establishment of an e-passport National Public Key Directory (PKD) that will make Nigeria part of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will provide a secure and fast means of validating travel documents of Nigerians and improve security at international borders. The contract was awarded to Imperial Network Limited for N229,125,750.

Maku said the Hadeija Valley Irrigation Project phase I had been directed by the President to be completed. It covers 6,325 hectares andwas awarded to C.G.C Nigeria Limited for N3,954,837,670.23 with 14 months completion period.
