INEC Not owing youth Corpers, Lagos REC

Following the threat by some National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members used by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise in Lagos to embark on strike, INEC Resident Commissioner in the state, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, yesterday, explained that the Commission was not owing the corp members as they had been fully paid in accordance with directive of the national commission.

However, thousands of protesters comprising of human rights advocates, civil society organisations, student union activists and community leaders, amongst others, yesterday, stormed the state office of INEC and the state secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja to protest the shortcomings and irregularities, which had characterised the ongoing exercise across all the country, and demanded for a two-week extension of the exercise.

When asked on the threat by some NYSC members to boycott duty, yesterday, over alleged unpaid allowances, Ogunmola retorted “they have no justification to embark on any boycott.”

He said: “There are some local government areas where the NYSC members are fed. What happened in various local government areas is different. What we are doing is what we had been directed by the national commission and that is to give N10,000 to each of them, which we had done.”ne
