Man remanded for trafficking hemp

A Federal High Court in Ibadan on Tuesday remanded Fatai Lawal in prison for trafficking 34.4 kg of hemp.

Justice P.I. Ajoku remanded Lawal after he changed his plea from not guilty to guilty to a two-count charge bordering on trafficking of an illicit drug.

Ajoku remanded him and adjourned the case until May 9 for review of facts and sentencing.

Earlier, Mr Raphael Himinkaiye, Counsel for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Aug. 28 2018, along Ajibode Road in Ibadan.

Himinkaiye said the defendant was driving a Micra car with Reg. No. YRE 676 SE when he was apprehended by the police.

“The defendant was transporting 34.4 kg of Cannabis to an unknown location when he was arrested,’’ the prosecutor said.

Himinkaiye said the offence contravened Sections 11 (B) AND (C) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Law of the Federation 2004.
