Wike to INEC - 'Don’t involve military in result collation'

RIVERS State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that the military is not part of the collation of the governorship and legislative election results.

INEC had said that the collation of election result would be carried out between April 2 and 5, 2019.

Wike, who made the call in Port Harcourt on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the commission, stated that the Army was responsible for the violence, which erupted in some area during the March 9 governorship and House of Assembly polls.

The governor also recalled that the violence led to the March 10, 2019 suspension of the electoral process.

“The only way you can have peaceful election is when soldiers are not made part of it. Let the Army remove their hands from elections. When soldiers go to the collation room, people will resist them and they will shoot the people. That was how violence came about. Was there violence at the polling units?”

Describing Rivers as the most peaceful state in the country, the governor disagreed with claims in some quarters that the state was violent.
