NJC to reconvene today over Onnoghen, Muhammad

The National Judicial Council (NJC) will reconvene today to deliberate on the fate of the embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen and a acting CJN Tanko Muhammad.

The NJC had on January 29 adjourned its meeting to February 11 after it directed Onnoghen and Mohammed to respond to petitions against them.

Onnoghen is reported to have responded to a petition by Zikhirillahi Ibrahim of Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civil Education, while Justice Mohammed was said to have responded to two petitions by the Centre for Justice and Peace Initiative and Lagos lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN).

The replies, which were said to have been made since on Tuesday February 5, has not been made public, but Justice Onnoghen had in his statement to the CCB explained that he forgot to declare some of the domiciliary accounts linked to him.

Meanwhile, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), in a statement by its spokesman, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere yesterday alleged that the NJC meeting has been compromised by the executive to force CJN Onnoghen to retire from the judiciary while acting CJN Muhammad is to be confirmed.
