Deji Adeyanju, the Convener of
Concerned Nigerians, a civil society organisation, has been released.
Recall that Adeyanju
was arrested on November 28, 2018 alongside Daniel Abobama and Boma Williams
for leading a protest to demand the neutrality of the Police in 2019
forthcoming general elections.
Adeyanju was picked up alongside
two others by armed policemen stationed in front of the Force Headquarters in
Abuja and was consequently charged to court.
The former PDP Social Media
Director was summarily arraigned alongside Daniel Abobama and Boma Williams at
Karshi Magistrate Court, Federal Capital Territory yesterday, shortly after his
arrest and was remanded in Prison custody in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
It was learnt that he was
released at about 7pm on Monday and was received by members of human rights
groups.
According to SaharaReporters:
“Deji Adeyanju has been released and he is in high spirits, hale and hearty.”
The force had arraigned him for
“criminal defamatory and derogatory conduct against constituent authority and
breach of law and order” in relation to “posts on his Facebook page”, among
other offences.
Police said Adeyanju and his
group of protesters have been charged of Criminal Conspiracy, Joint Act,
defamation of character, public nuisance and sundry offences.
