All Progressives Congress (APC)
Senators, Monday night, met with the party’s National Chairman, Adams
Oshiomhole, in Abuja.
The agenda was on sacking Senate
President, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu from office.
No fewer than 30 private, and
mostly tinted vehicles, dropped off the lawmakers at the venue – a house in Aso
Drive, Abuja.
The same location was where the
APC lawmakers converged hours after last Tuesday’s seige at the National
Assembly.
The first Senator to arrive at
about 7:49pm was Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who was driven in a Toyota Prado SUV
with a covered plate number.
Senator Lanre Tejuoso arrived in
a Toyota Tundra truck at 8:03pm, while Senator Yayi Adeola arrived in a Sequoia
SUV at around 8:15pm.
An aide to a lawmaker backing the
Senate leadership revealed on Tuesday that although the meeting was
deadlocked, there were talks of going on with the impeachment plot even if it
falls short of the required two-thirds.
He said: “The meeting was renewed
onslaught, they are ready to achieve this illegality by hook or crook.
“The plan is to impeach Saraki
and Ekweremadu by any means and whatever objection that would be raised
concerning whether or not such removal was illegal would be argued in court.
“Already, the national chairman
has brought four state governors on board – two from North-west, one each from
North-central and South-west.
“They are to work with the
Senators, take care of funding and also convince some others still sitting on the
fence to join the project”.
Oshiomhole had on Friday vowed
that the party will work for Saraki’s impeachment “in accordance with the law”.
Meanwhile, 49 Senators of the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have written to Saraki, informing him of their
vote of confidence in his leadership.
However, Mike Ozekhome SAN, a
human right activist, has warned the APC against disrespecting the
constitution.
The constitutional lawyer noted
that the “1999 Constitution requires at least 73 senators” to impeach a sitting
Senate President.
