Nigerians reply Presidency for basing Buhari’s fitness for 2019 on 800m trek

The Presidency on Tuesday dismissed statement by the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal that President Muhammadu Buhari was too old to seek a second term in 2019.

Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, refuted Tambuwal’s statement, saying that the 800 metres trek embarked upon by the president from the Eid ground to his private residence in Daura, Katsina State was an indication of his fitness to seek re-election in 2019.

This position however stirred controversy online as some Nigerians wondered why trekking 800metres by Buhari should be seen as an achievement or test of being fit for a second term.

Some of them reasoned that this has rather raised questions about whether the president is actually fit to seek re-election.

Here are some comments gathered from Twitter:

@UDeh_Christian : “I weep for Nigeria, how did we get here, he walked 800m and that means he’s fit to rule the country? Even madmen walk longer than that. Respectfully, sir, you lack the intellectual capacity and the innovative backbone to move this country forward.”

@Martinz_officials “Mohammadu Buhari trekking 800 M from praying ground to your private house is not an achievement . It will not increase Nigeria economy. Buhari you are a monumental failure.”

@Gateshild “Is he crippled before, why all this noise of 800m that’s to show something is wrong with his health.Maybe before he can’t walk but after London hospital visit he can walk again let’s hope he continues walking up to 3000m.”

@Emmytrix “Imagine. I was wondering the achievement. I thought at first it was some 800 miles.”

@Alegallawyer “The entire people in that photo must have walked the same distance! However if we have to celebrate a less than a kilometre walk as an achievement, it’s either there’s nothing done to celebrate or the President is so sick that its a feat to walk just 800meters!

@LAwbestt “Another achievement. The reason he needs to be kicked out of @AsoRock next year.”

@CodedSquare “Is this also part of his achievement or 2019 electioneering campaign? I thought we have left that era of propaganda. This is Nigeria and not Togo. He trekked to the prayer ground and so what? So many Nigerians do that on daily basis.”

@FynfaceIV “Would trekking have any effect on the economy? or in the lives of those people chanting Sai Baba?

@Shamehng “Is that too much for him to trek? Is that why we should vote him come 2019? Does that mean he is fully fit?

@Chimkels “Question should be why a 75 years old man should be seeking re-election in a country that retires civil servants at the age of 60? And when trekking 800km is now a test on strength in leading a country?

@Lorrenzodwin “Since trekking is now the requirement for the presidency, mai-ruwas all over the country are more qualified. Buhari should come for a debate when he’s ready let’s even hear what he’s coming to do.”

@Codshalom77 “Trekking 800m less than a kilometer has suddenly become an achievement. After 3yrs with nothing to show for it, we suddenly have this achievement of trekking. It is now crystal clear that Animals are in power.”

@Seedofworld “So if my father can trek 800x3m=2400 after coming back from a medical trip, means he deserves to be president not minding if his competent or not. You these Sai baba people will not kill us.”
