Saraki asks state Assemblies to stop pensions of ex-govs, deputies

Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has asked all the states of the federation to stop the payment of pension to all former governors of their respective states.

To achieve this, Saraki, yesterday, urged all the state Houses of Assembly to take a cue from Kwara State and pass their own versions of the bill suspending payment of pension to former governors and deputy governors.

Kwara State assembly passed the bill, Tuesday.

Saraki in a statement, yesterday, hailed Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Ali Ahmad, for working to pass the bill.

Saraki said: “I am pleased that following my conversation with Kwara Speaker, Ali Ahmad, two months ago, the bill to suspend the payment of pension to former governors and their deputies when they hold a political or public office was passed into law yesterday by Kwara House of Assembly.

“Moving forward, it is my hope that other state assemblies take a cue from Kwara State and pass similar pieces of legislation into law.”

Saraki was governor of Kwara State between 2003 and 2011.

States such as Lagos, Edo and Akwa Ibom had long before now, passed into law a bill recommending payment of pensions to past governors and their deputies in the states.
