Religious, ethnic crisis rising in Nigeria – Shehu Sani speaks on solutions

Shehu Sani, senator representing Kaduna central says President Muhammadu Buhari cannot stop herdsmen killings and attacks in Benue, Taraba and other parts of the country alone.

Sani, on his Facebook page stated that only eminent northern statesmen, who had not taken sides or made any inflammatory statements on the crisis could restore peace.

He wrote “The fallout of the tragedy in Benue, Taraba and other states in the North cannot be solved by the President or the Federal Government alone.

“Beyond the bloodshed and security problems, there is an evident divide and rising tempers along religious and ethnic lines. If nothing is done now, it will be difficult to do it later when it becomes a mindset transferred to future generations.

“Eminent, non partisan, northern elder statesmen who have not taken side and have not made any inflammatory statements on the crisis must rise to the occasion and serve as agents of peace, reconciliation and mediation.

“They should form themselves into a committee and visit the affected states and initiate moves towards mending fences and restoring the peace and unity of the North and by extension Nigeria.”
