Police recover three corpses as Fulani herdsmen attack Plateau commuters

The relative peace in Plateau State was disrupted on Saturday when suspected Fulani herdsmen laid ambush for commuters in Jebu Miango Village in the Bassa Local Government Area.

Although the hoodlums fled on sighting the police, three corpses, a motorcycle and 24 expended shells of 7.62mm ammunition were recovered from the scene.

Northern City News could, however, not ascertain if the dead bodies were those of the commuters or victims of the incessant attacks by the herdsmen from previous incidents.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Matthias Tyopev, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident, on Tuesday.

He told our correspondent that investigation into the crime had commenced, noting, however, that no suspect had been arrested yet.

Tyopev said, “On Saturday, at about 20:00 hours, the Divisional Police Officer in Bassa Division got information that at about 19:45 hours of the same day that a gang of unknown gunmen laid ambush on the road between DTV and Jamraf settlement in Jebu Miango Village, Bassa LGA. They were attacking unsuspecting commuters.

“After receiving the information, the DPO led a patrol team to the scene. But on sighting the police vehicle, the armed men took to their heels and disappeared into the nearby bushes.

“The police combed the area, but the bandits were not found since they spotted the police from a far distance and ran very fast. At the scene, three corpses were recovered who were killed by the gunmen. A motorcycle was also recovered from the scene.

“Also recovered from the scene were 24 expended shells of 7.62mm ammunitions. Photographs of the dead bodies were taken. No suspect has been arrested yet, while investigation is in progress.”

Northern City News had reported the claim by Berom Youth Moulders Association that Fulani herdsmen had sacked and ‘conquered’ over 54 communities in Plateau State between 2001 and 2018 and renamed them their settlement.
