APC wins Kano council poll

It was a landslide victory for the ruling All Progressive Congress weekend in Kano as it   posted overwhelming victory over all comers during the local government election.

The results announced by Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC, yesterday, declared the APC winner having swept all the 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship seats.

KANSIEC   boss, Professor Garba Ibrahim Sheka, disclosed that 25 political parties, including People’s Democratic Party, PDP, which featured one chairmanship candidate, participated in the council election.

Professor Sheka said the exercise was rancour free and that there was no reported cases of violence across the state.

Sheka   said “security reports at our disposal during and after the council poll suggested that there was no arrest made nor any violence recorded while the exercise lasted”.

The Chairman who acknowledged the challenges that characterized the conduct of the election was quick to dismiss allegations of alleged irregularities.

The Professor of economics   however noted that the delay in the commencement of the election in almost all the polling units attributed the shortcomings to late arrival of sensitive materials ordered from China.

Sheka explained that the commission had to settle for an alternative   by contacting Ethiopia Ambassador in Nigeria to facilitate the use of Ethiopian airlines to convey the last consignment of the electoral materials back to the country.

The KANSIEC boss revealed that the commission received N600 million from the state government for the payment of 35,000 ad-hoc staff and 44 presiding officers engaged across the local councils.
