Sagay slams Buhari’s critics over dead appointees

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), on Monday slammed those criticizing President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for naming dead men among appointees into boards of Federal Government agencies.

Sagay believes Buhari is not to be blamed, describing the critics as Lilliputians and idle minds complaining over nothing.

The professor added that the Presidency was not supposed to go knocking from door to door 24 hours before the announcement to ask who was dead or alive.

“What I find irritating is the so-called outrage by the Nigerian elite that in a list of almost 3,000 people nominated for various agencies, five or six had died,” Sagay told newsmen on New Year Day.

“And there is a general pretense by the Nigerian elite that it was of huge, monumental importance; that it shows incompetence and all that.

“I ask myself: a list that has been under compilation for over two years, revised and re-revised, do they expect that about 3,000 people would all still be alive after two years?

“If not, do they expect the Presidency to go knocking from door to door 24 hours before the announcement to ask who was dead or alive, or to ask if they would survive until the announcement? Are they supposed to have done that?

“So, the whole thing (criticisms) is extremely unreasonable,” he said.

  2. Is Sagay really a professor? is he truly a SAN? Are you sure he went to school?

  3. Sagay, this is wrong! When you prepare a list for 2 years or that long, what government should have done shortly before announcement was a verification exercise for the people. This should have been done before going to public with the list. It could have been done at geopolitical zonal levels or using online platform/emails/SMS to confirm their availability for the job. It is not only to know if they are dead or alive. But also to find out if they are still available for the job. Its possible someone have found another lucrative job in their state governments as political appointees or in international organizations like world bank, UNICEF etc. While others might have even changed their minds not to support and work for PMB government. Sagay you don't just open your mouth and talk anyhow

  4. Well you guys have point but at the same time, its appointment bases nobody needs to verify if you are still interested or not...On picking up appointment letter, there is room for confirmation of appointment within certain period of time. Hence failure to do so someone will takes over...

    1. Oga sir, I disagree with you. You prepared something for about two years, before you finally decided to take it out, there should be a kind of check to make sure that everything is still okay. That is verification I'm talking about. That this is an appointment does not mean you don't take your time to dot all the
i and cross the t. There is no limit/rules/laws that says appointment or appointees can not be verified. Verification shows how much you pay attention to details, how thorough you are, how prepared you are, how competent you are and many more. It means to double-check. Oh you think verification simply means hey everyone line up show you papers? Even if you do that alone, it has a lot to speak about you that is in charge. You don't do things anyhow. I'm sure someone like you will even say that no need of running through their CV just to have an idea of people being appointed? But if the process has gone beyond looking at their CV, common sense should suggest hearing from them at least after two years before you take list to the public. That's verification to know if they are still available or not. What is worth doing is what doing well.
