Muslim lawyers blow hot over hijab controversy

The Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria, MULAN, has described as unlawful the recent refusal by the Nigerian Law School to allow Firdaus Amasa entrance into the venue of the ‘Call to Bar’ ceremony recently in Abuja because she put on hijab.

MULAN made the declaration in a communique on Monday in Katsina shortly after its three-day extra-ordinary National Executive Committee meeting.

The communiquĂ©, signed by the association’s National President, Dr. Kamal Dawud, read, “On the issue of discrimination, humiliation and the subsequent denial of calling Firdaus Al-Jannah Amasa to the Nigerian Bar, MULAN maintains that the position of the law remains as decided by the Court of Appeal in its judgment in ‘The Provost, Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin & 2 Ors v. Bashirat Saliu & 2 Ors (CA/IL/49/2006), and Asiyah & Ors v. LASG & Ors (2016), 15 NWLR (Pt 1535) 117, where the court declared that the use of hijab by female Muslim students constitutes an act of worship, hence the refusal to allow the appellants wear it on their uniform is a clear infraction of their rights.

“This remains the position of the law and it is unlawful to deprive female Muslims from putting on the hijab in government-owned institutions.

“The association salutes Amasa’s courage and defiance in standing up for her rights and adhering to the tenets of her religion.

“MULAN is also not oblivious of the lopsided tilt of our legal system. Muslim lawyers have been subjected to conform to certain practices and adorn themselves with paraphernalia like the wig and gown that have Judeo/Christian neo-colonialist origin without complain.

“MULAN has set up a nine-man committee to meet and make representations to all relevant authorities in order to ensure that the issue is justly determined.”

The National President of MULAN, in his presentation, encouraged lawyers to rise up to the challenge of ensuring the peaceful co-existence of Nigerians with respect and obedience to the rule of law.

  1. He that is in Rome, behave like a Roman. Have respect for code and conducts. Should traditionalists or other religions wear their outfit to professional functions as well? Let's not make issues where there are non.

  2. My Muslim brothers,l have lots of Muslims as friends. I don't hate Muslims, but let's not bring religion into everything. Imagine how it would look if everybody wears his or her religious clothes! By Saluting the girl's disobedience you're not helping her. That girl should be punished for deliberately causing disunity! Breaking codes and ethics of a professional body doesn't make one a true Muslim.

  3. I am afraid Nigerian Muslim fanatics are taking this too far,do these MULAN consider other religions?Going by this claim now, should NBA recalled her to bar then the code of conduct will change and all other faith will be allowed to wear their uniform too. Must we even place religion over all issues in Nigeria? If you want to Islamise the country let us no,Muslim wants us to study arabic as a law student, study islamic lac,u have sharia, u want to wear hijab in school, wear hijab in theater for operations, wear hijab everywhere.

  4. Do Muslims want us to divide the Nigerian law school into :Nigerian Law School for Muslims and Nigerian Law school for Christians? The Government should arrest that girl now, before this situation gets violent! She said she did it deliberately! Somebody should not deliberately cause disunity and still be allowed to walk freely.Imagine a member of Cele Church that attends NLS ceremony, claiming the same right.

  5. Whoever is backing the action of the baby lawyer is only being sentimental. The problem is that Nigerian Governments for political reasons have not been run as a truly secular country with the tacit support they give to religious bodies. The cry that there is an attempt to Islamise the country is being fuelled with actions like this.Imagine what happened in Osun State where Ogbeni Aregbe took over Christian Schools only for for him to introduce hijap in those schools because of his religious bigotry.
