FIFA awards Super Eagles World Cup match to Algeria, fines Nigeria N2.2m

The World governing body, FIFA, has slammed a heavy fine on Nigeria for fielding an ineligible player against Algeria in a Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier.

The disciplinary committee of the body in a statement on Tuesday slammed a princely sum of CHF 6,000 (N2.2 million) on the three-time African champions.

The Committee stated that the Nigeria Football Federation was sanctioned for the match between Algeria and Nigeria on November 10, 2017.

The match, according to the committee, is declared to be forfeited and awarded 3-0 in favour of Algeria, with the NFF also receiving a fine of CHF 6,000.

“The sanction relates to the player Abdullahi Shehu failing to serve the automatic one-match suspension imposed on him as a result of receiving a caution in two separate matches of the same competition.

“This sanction bears no impact on the final result of the preliminary competition for the FIFA World Cup since Nigeria had already qualified (and Algeria eliminated) before the match took place,” the statement read.

Due to the sanction, Nigeria’s points in the group stage would automatically drop from 14 to 11, while Algeria gets five points.

  1. Nonsense! Were FIFA match officials not at the game? Didn't they see the players before the match started?

  2. I think Nigeria should be careful with its conducts.

  3. What a big blunder by Nigeria. Can't they follow simple rules? I guess they actually forget this one.

  4. I also think that NFF should strengthen its technical Dept, match statistics and anticipated future outcomes properly documented and analysed to avoid future occurrence. FIFA on its part should also forward list of ineligible players to the concerned federation before the match is played, especially to African teams who find record keeping pretty difficult. Thank God we were not stripped of WC qualification.

  5. Lets stop abusing FIFA and put the blame where it should belong- with the NFF and the technical crew. Thank God we had already qualified otherwise this administrative blunder would have cost us our place in the world cup and FIFA would have no blame. The question is, who will be sanctioned in Nigeria for this grave incompetence, or will it like everything Nigerian be blown away with the wind? The issue here is incompetence- let's leave FIFA out of this.

  6. Your good understanding and kindness in using all the parts had been very useful. I do not definitely clearly know what i might do without problems hadn't experienced this sort of step like this.
