Jonathan reveals why he built 165 Almajiri schools in the North

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday disclosed that his then administration built 165 model schools in the North despite getting the least vote from the region.

Jonathan made the disclosure while addressing an audience at the Peace Summit organized by the Junior Chamber International, JCI, in Malaysia.

The former president said his administration built 165 Almajiri integrated model schools despite the votes he got from the region.

According to Jonathan, he was inspired to construct the model schools in other to tackle the high rate of illiteracy in the region.

He said, “In Nigeria, there were 10.5 million (about 15% of the population) out of school children who were of school age, going by UNICEF figures, as at the time I became president.

“Over 80% of these children for which majority are known as Almajiri came from the northern part of Nigeria, where I recorded the least votes in the elections I contested.

“Knowing the value of education, I could see that the ugly situation was limiting the opportunities of these children and negatively affecting the development of my country.

“That was why my administration decided to build 165 Almajiri Integrated Model Schools which combined both western and Islamic education in its curricula.”

Jonathan had earlier revealed what influenced his decision to concede the 2015 Presidential election to his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari.

  1. Please please please if anyone is aware of those teachers teaching in those schools should help and clarify the air, I am in the north , but I have never seen the almajiri of those schools neither See the teachers nor even to see the so-called almajiri school or even to hear people chatting about it. Jonathan could have mentioned the states that got the so-called almajiri schools and their location to prove his claim.

  2. your problem zalli is your outright hatred for this man called Jonathan, you will never see anything good about him even if states location of the so called schools are mentioned you will decline.
we were all in this nation when his report card was shown, Jonathan did well in equipping the north with education but he failed woefully in curbing corruption, if Jonathan did half the work he did in the north down the south someone like me would've supported him for another tenure

    2. U see!! What was the essence if it wasn't going to be used. Maybe another way of siphoning public funds. Just that you cannever get northern votes with that. An average northerner like every other Nigerian firstly needs to be fed before thinking of going to school.

  5. Goodluck Jonathan will continue to talk nonsense. Is building Almajiri School your priority? Was building Almajiri Schools the federal governments jurisdiction? Besides, after you had built the schools, what happened? Were teachers employed by the Federal Government for those schools? What effort was made to bring life into those schools? I mean, I do not understand Nigerians. You just woke up one day and decided to build Almajiri Schools in the North, how many primary/secondary schools, and Universities did you build in the South East? I pray God never to allow a hopeless and stupid idiot like Goodluck Jonathan to be President of Nigeria. You just wasted 5 years as President and you are here talking nonsense. Efulu Efu.
