ASUU strike: UNIBEN, AAU lecturers down tools Wednesday

Following the declaration of a nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, lecturers at the University of Benin and the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, in Edo State, have said that they would begin full implementation of the order on Wednesday.

The National President of the union, Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi, had announced the commencement of the strike on Monday during a meeting of the National Executive Council of ASUU in Abuja.

Ogunyemi had said that to ensure effectiveness during the strike, there would be no teaching, examination, and attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of the union’s chapters in the country.

At the University of Benin, it was learnt that the strike had yet to begin as the academic staff had not been officially directed to down tools by the leadership of the union.

Regular students of the university had recently concluded their second-semester examination and were not in session.

But the chapter Chairman of the union, Prof. Julius Iyasele, told The PUNCH on Monday that the industrial action would be fully declared on Wednesday.

“Obviously, it is a nationwide strike. Final-year students are still here carrying out their final-year projects.

“By Wednesday, we will declare the strike here fully. We will start our implementation on Wednesday,” Iyasele added.

At AAU, it was gathered many students of the institution had their lectures cancelled on Monday.

It was also learnt that the strike may affect the forthcoming examination of the students, which is scheduled to hold at the end of August.

But the chairman of ASUU in the university, Prof. Monday Igbafen, said that the union would not grant any waiver for anyone as the strike would be fully adhered to.

Igbafen said, “We are fully part of the strike but we are meeting at our congress on Wednesday to finally brief our members of all the details about the strike and from there, we will leave for our various homes.

“There is no waiver for anybody. The national president said it all. We want to use the strike to make the government responsible because the government we understand is not responsible.”
