CNN mocks Nigerians over President Buhari's absence + VIDEO

American news network, CNN, has mocked Nigeria, asking where is President Muhammadu Buhari.

WATCH VIDEO BELOW

The Nigerian president has not been in the country for over two months and the news television in a query on its website on Sunday asked which “head of state from which country has not set foot in his homeland in over two months?”

The mockery came in the latest edition of CNN’s “The Global Public Square (GPS)” show anchored by Fareed Zakaria. In an apparent mockery of Nigeria and her President Muhammadu Buhari, CNN, on its programme displayed at 4:59pm local time on Sunday, asked,“The head of state from which country has not set foot in his homeland in over two months?”

It went ahead to tick an option with the name Nigeria as the correct answer. The options were given as Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Nigeria and Syria. A screenshot of the mockery tweeted by Chidi Odinkalu, Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission asked What do you say Nigerians?

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari has been in London since May 7 on a medical follow-up. Some political delegations including the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo have been visiting President Buhari in London and have told Nigerians that the president is doing just fine and will soon return to continue his presidential duties.

  1. NigerianEye sees that question as a mockery? So if a Head of State is hospitalised for 2 months, then you see that as a mockery of his or her country? Then you've got twisted minds!

    2. of course i expected this same reply from a sentimental northern myopic mind. Most of you guys are something else with your primitive thinking. How is it normal for a president to leave a country and not even address his subjects at least once a month or week to let us know his state of health. How can u pray over something you have no idea about? This is the same person who "abolished" overseas medical trip yet he has relocated to a foreign land as a president?!! You people are the ones making a mockery of Nigeria, the drawback, the thinking, the mentality and thinking you own Nigeria in your tiny minds. Dont worry, sometimes, as christians , we can also lose our humanity and remove weeds for the good of humanity. Sacrifices will be made eventually for sanity to be bred and the good ones among you including the ones i have as best friends will be spared even if i lay down my blood for them. I'm certain they'd also do the same for me cuz they have proved themselves over and over again. Others like u are cancerous

    3. i think the word "mockery" was accurately used by NE, because that is the manner in which the presentation was made by CNN. i also think it sounded sacarstic. it is actually possible to have such a situation like this happen to a set of people or country in utter darkness. but considering a country like nigeria that has its citizens online and everywhere around the world. why shouldnt we know what is happening to our president. it should not be shrouded in secrecy. the world actually expects better from us thats why the funny presentation was made by CNN. i dont think in our homes if our father is sick we wont want to know what is happening with our father. we should just keep living and not bother to know or make effort to him. it is a new trend and will give birth to new problems if we dont stop now.

  3. Anonymous 11.26 PM, the question is a veritable mockery because the Nigerian government with all its apparatuses has been too economical with truth about Buhari's medical conditions. Nobody knows the exact ailment that has reduced Buhari to mere vegetable. Take for example, American senator McCain's brain cancer diagnosis; it wasn't concealed. It was announced to the entire globe. Why can't Buhari's diagnosis be told to the world. Concealing his diagnosis tells of primitive and stone age culture. But the world has long moved much beyond this approach. It's those who are behind it that have twisted mind.

    1. You can't compare Nigeria to the United States of America.. Technically, i see no big deal in going for medical trip, considering his old age... But the way the question was put, inferiority complex sets in among those who asume they are inferior.. Then they invariably see it as a form of mockery.. No offense though

    2. Although slavery officially ended centuries ago, people like you are still slaves to America in your minds. Who decided that the norms in America should be the norms for the world? How many times have you heard of the diagnosis of ailments of the Chinese President? or the Korean President? or the Russian President? Or of a Saudi monarch?

Some of you won the American visa lottery, found yourself in the US - something you never thought would happen. Then suddenly anything that does not align with U.S. norms becomes "wrong". So, because America announces the ailments of John McCain, then the whole world has to announce the ailments of their leaders? That is real mental slavery!

There is a proverb that says "When dry bones is mentioned in a story, the old man feels uneasy". As @Oy dave@2:39am said, it is inferiority complex that makes people like you see the CNN question as a mockery. I am a Nigerian, living in Nigeria, and I do not see it as mockery. Why should the fact that my 75-year-old president has been hospitalised for 2 months amount to a mockery?

    3. It is a mockery because he is not ruling the country instead he is in another country on a sick bed and he refused to step down as president. We have no president in action. Also, Nigerians deserves to know what is going on with the person they elected as president. They don't have to tell us his diagnosis but they should tell us how sick he is. If Nigeria was well developed our president will be receiving care in his own country. CNN can make fun of us. We deserve it. We deserve to know what is going on because he is our president. They should stop lying to us.

You must be ignorant of the Nigerian constitution. First read what it says before you come here to comment. The Constitution recognises that a President can and would be away from time to time for various reasons, not excluding illness, and made provision for how the government is run in his absence. So, what is your problem? If you are given the doctors's diagnosis of President Buhari's ailment today, what would you do with it? Provide medication?

Your inferiority complex makes you see the CNN question as a mockery. You need to grow up and shake off your inferiority complex. Nigeria would not be the first country to have an ailing president. Even you are not beyond illness.

    6. Anonymous 8:09AM I assume you meant North Korean President. You lost me with that peer group.

    7. @July 31, 2017 at 2:53 PM
Yes, I meant the North Korean president. The point in that post is that every country has its culture that informs how its affairs are conducted. Every one of our past leaders has traveled overseas either for routine medical checkup or for real ailments. But it is not in our culture to publicise what such ailments are.

By the way, did people read what Donald Trump's private doctor disclosed about Trump? The US president has lived with an ailment and has been on a treatment that affected his hair. That disclosure was not official - it did not come from the White House.

Some countries are more open than others, and we err when we keep citing United States as the standard for everything. Even, among the so-called advanced countries, there are vast differences. For example, the French laughed Americans to scorn over the "big deal" they (Americans) made of the Monica Lewinsky affair. The French actually expect their president to have a mistress!

Nigerians - especially those in diaspora - need to stop thinking that whatever does no reflect the American way is wrong. Nigeria has its own values.

You are in mental slavery! You think if Nigeria does not do what United States does, then there is something wrong with Nigeria? Go and ask the North Koreans the diagnosis of their president.

  7. Americans are chaos mongers! It beats their imagination how Nigeria is still one and intact despite the fact that the President is not in the country for 2 solid months. Their assumption that we are backward has been proved wrong. Now they want to incite us! No way. More so,who can't fall sick? Is Telling Nigerians the nature of the president illness the cure for the ailment? Please let's join hand together to pray for his speedy recovery and resume back to office.

Do you want to remain enslaved forever? What evidence do you even have that he is even where we think he his?

Open up your mind, notice how the likes of Mr. Obasanjo and Prof. Woke Soyinka are suddenly quite.

  9. I AM USUALLY NOT A READER OF LONG TEXT NOT TO MENTION WHEN THEY ARE STALE. BUT ON THIS ONE, I URGE YOU TO PLEASE REEEEEEEEEAAAÀAAAAAADDDDDD.......

Presentation by Nurudeen Lemu, a National Confab delegate representing the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA,

    April 14,2014

“As a delegate, and as a people representing people of faith in God from the Islamic perspective, one thing we believe is that God will protect the community that stands for justice even if they are not Muslims and God will not protect the community that goes contrary to justice even if they call themselves Muslims.

God is not a religious bigot. He is not a male chauvinist. He is not an ethnocentric tribalist. God is not the oppressor of anyone. God is with those who care; those who want for others those things they want for themselves.

One tendency for people who claim to follow a religion is to slide into the position of believing that we are better than the others. We overestimate our virtues and underestimate the goodness in others. The tendency is for us to become spiritually arrogant; to forget that others are people like us.

There is always a tension between representing our religious communities or our ethnic communities and our loyalty to the virtues and values and teachings of our religion even those lofty ideals of
    our ethnic groups.

It is our prayer that delegates will try and ensure that the spiritual strength we have in us will keep us from not getting angry and not allowing our bitterness from others to make us sail from justice. It is in this vein and as a delegate from the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, we condemn the murder of all Christians, we condemn the murder of all Muslims. Not because they are Christians or Muslims, but because they are human beings – creatures of God.

There is no compulsion in religion. We all own Nigeria. We all belong here. And we all have the right to self-determination. We should respect that right and do unto others what we will do unto ourselves.

There are many other countries that have ethnic and religious diversity far greater than what we have here in Nigeria. But something that distinguishes us from them, be it Singapore, United States, they have been able to respect the rule of law so that any bigot, any nepotic individual who tramples on the right of anyone especially that of the minority, the rule of law will catch up. Satan will only find a hole if there is a crack in that rule of law.

Ever ethnic group is an oppressed minority somewhere. Every group is a religious and ethnic minority somewhere. Every majority or settler is an indigene somewhere. In one way, we are all settlers; we just don’t remember where we came from or why we came.

But ultimately, we are all visitors to this planet, from God we come and to Him we return. As Muslim delegates, we come in brotherhood, as brothers and friends to solve our common problems and not as
    adversaries.

We come against the exploitation of religion and religious sentiments. We come against stereotyping, stigmatizing and dehumanizing of each other. We come against the use of religion as a political decoy and as a distraction from the critical things that bedevil our nation.

I pray that at the end of this conference, we will all grow in our humanity and respect for each other.”
