Ohanaeze reacts as Arewa youths ask Osinbajo to facilitate Igbo exit

In reaction to a letter to the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, begging him to allow Ndigbo to go and have their Biafra Republic., the apex umbrella for the Igbo, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said the North could not drive Ndigbo out of Nigeria.

The Deputy Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mr. Chuks Ibegbu, who spoke to one of our correspondents in Enugu, said Ohanaeze insisted on the restructuring of the country, and not secession.

Stressing that the northern youths lacked the mandate to speak for the Igbo, Ibegbu noted that the Arewa groups were trying to provoke another war in the country.

Ibegbu stated, “In the first place, I want to thank the Acting President for the role he is playing in this situation. He is a peacemaker and he has shown himself to be conversant with the dynamics of leadership.

“The Acting President has told all the parties to allow peace to reign. Igbo are peaceful people; so, we will abide by what he said.

“We are conscious of what the Acting President told the Igbo leaders and the traditional rulers when they visited the Presidential Villa. Therefore, we will not be drawn into taking issue with these northern youths; they are people who have shown themselves to be lawbreakers and warmongers.

“The activities of these Arewa youths have shown that there is more than meets the eye to the ultimatum they gave the Igbo in the North. They simply want to drag the country into another war.”

Ibegbu stressed that agitation for separation was not peculiar to the Igbo, as claimed by the Arewa youths.

The Ohanaeze spokesman observed that the agitation in the South-East was largely a protest against marginalisation, rather than a wish for secession.

Ibegbu added, “That some individuals are pushing for self-determination in the South-East does not mean that the Igbo want to secede. The real situation is a protest against marginalisation.

“We should not forget that even now, as we speak, the Boko Haram sect is still canvassing Islamic rule in the North, using violent means – that is a form of agitation for secession.

“So why should the northern youths ignore the log in their eyes to bother about the speck in another person’s eyes; why the venom against the Igbo?”

  5. Most of our eastern brothers didn't have full understanding of the word secession. They thought having seceded from Nigeria they will only need visa to come back to continue their businesses in the same Nigeria they politically rejected. No sir. For no easterner having seceded will be given such rights and privilleges in the next hundred years and anyone that smuggles himself/herself in will be charged for espionage and spend the rest of their lives as political detainees. Long live Nigeria

  6. Igbo are clear what they want. They threatened the polity with disobedience and war if they are not given what they want. The very highest political holder from their fold recently signed a document to free one of their own who has never hid his desire to dismember the country and take the Igbo away from the union. So don't pretend to us what we already know. Pack and leave and we shall have peace.

But we need to be clear on something. You don't claim your rights and violate ours. When you seek divorce it should be total. You cannot be given a place to call your own and yet be living in your master's house. When our marriage is broken, we want you totally out of our region, for if you stay any longer, you are on you own. Once Biafra comes into being, Igbo freedom in other parts of the country will cease to be, as you are now foreigners who must be regulated; and a foreigner who harbors so much ill will against his host is not deserving of a place to sleep. Pack and leave. A word is sufficient for the wise.

  8. When the agitation was heating up, where was this Ohaneze group? They secretly support the agitation and give Kanu a backing that his type of secession is the choice of all Igbos. Now that the table is turned and quit notice is given to the Igbos to vacate the Northern region, this group felt uncomfortable. You can't eat your cake and still have it. Caution Kanu and his gullible followers who have no idea about what their action could cause. Clean your region first before talking about restructuring.
