(POLL) - Assessment of Buhari's second year in office: VOTE here to rate Mr. President's performance

It's officially half-time in President Buhari's government as we celebrate the second May 29 (democracy day) in President Buhari's 4-year tenure.

How would you rate President Buhari’s performance, two years after? Vote here

Since the first military misadventure in Nigeria in January 1966, when Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu claimed that one of the major reasons for the coup was the need to halt the dangerous spread of the cankerworm of corruption, most Nigerian leaders had almost always insisted that their reign would tackle corruption.

Buhari’s war on corruption has changed the face of Nigeria, the face of doing business, the face of running politics, the face of relating to one another (even at family level) and the face of making money – this, through the whistle-blower policy, where an individual who squeals expects to get a percentage of the funds when recovered.

But for a man who sought an office three times earlier, failing in the process, only to succeed at the fourth attempt; an attempt which was practically foisted on him at old age, Buhari suffers a cocktail of challenges

Top among the challenges he faces are his age and health challenges which appear to have conspired to slow him down, but in Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, promises to be an effective acting-president.

The past 24 months have been defined by so many hisses and some cheers as a result of the under listed events.

NigerianEye reviews the highs and lows of President Buhari's second year in office.

  • On day one of his administration, Buhari ordered the relocation of the Nigerian Military Command Centre to Maiduguri, a development that contributed to the success in the fight against insurgency.

  • Buhari made trips to neighbouring countries in a resolve to push Boko Haram elements out of Nigeria through a Multinational Joint Task Force.

  • A few months in the life of the administration, there was a new kind of patriotism among Nigerians given the improvement recorded in power supply and the return of order in public life. But this feeling only lasted a short time given what many termed the administration’s directionless steps.

  • It took Buhari 8 months to appoint his cabinet, and an additional 14 months for his government to finally unveil its medium-term economic strategy, the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan , ERGP.

  • Despite his electoral promise to reduce petrol pump price from the N87 per litre that he met it, President Buhari increased the price to N145 barely a year after coming to power.

  • In 2016, the President vowed to treat Niger Delta militants as terrorists and deal with them the way Boko Haram insurgents are being dealt with if the refuse to negotiate with the federal government.

  • The President at a media chat said the atrocities committed by Nnamdi Kanu and Sambo Dasuki were such that would not make the government release them despite court orders for their release.

  • The first budget of the Buhari administration worth N6.08trn budget was not passed after several months over allegations of padding.

  • To rejuvenate the war against corruption, President Buhari set up an Advisory Committee on War against Corruption

  • A presidential directive was given to ensure the closure of all multiple accounts in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of government, thereby plugging leakages.

  • President Buhari stirred hornet’s nest when he said on Al Jazeera that Nigerian students studying abroad will no longer be given foreign exchange, a move which saw the wards and their parents go through intense hardship.

  • In 2016, a Presidential Committee was set up to probe contracts awarded by the Office of the National Security Adviser , ONSA, from 2011 to 2015.

  • In August 2016, the Nigerian economy officially slipped into recession

  • The President signed an agreement with the Chinese government to improve Nigeria’s power infrastructure

  • Produced Agriculture Roadmap entitled, “The Green Alternative: Agriculture Promotion Policy, 2016-2020,” to revive agricultural sector and boost food production.

  • The President all defied the Senate on the two consecutive rejections of the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC.

  • Infamous handling of the allegation against the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, who allegedly owns property in Dubai. Rather than investigating the matter as demanded, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Dan-Ali said the allegation was calculated to distract the military from its war against insurgency.

  • Nigeria lost a colossal 3000 MW of electricity due to consistent vandalisation and sabotage of the pipelines and assets.
  • Frequent medical trips to London to treat an undisclosed ailment, while VP Osinbajo becomes acting-president

  • Eighty-two Chibok schoolgirls were released after negotiations between the terrorist group Boko Haram and the federal government in addition to the 21 earlier released.

  • Rumours of a military coup threatens Nigeria's long standing democracy for the first time since 1999

  • Exchange rate - N382/$1

The power is in your hands, it is up to you to decide and rate Buhari's performance in his second year in office.

    1. PROBLEM WITH BUHARI

One of the most outrageous accusation I've had to contend with is the accusation that I hate president Muhammadu Buhari. Some people believe my issues with him is not unconnected with the fact that he's a northern Muslim

First, the late president Umar Musa Yar'Adua was a Northerner. He was a Muslim. And he was from the same Katsina state as Buhari. Yet, even the devil was in love with him. Nigerians loved him and even held church vigil praying for him when he was ill. When Yar'Adua came to office, he crashed the price of fuel which OBJ had hiked. Umaru didn't just stop at reducing the price of fuel, he also reversed the sale of national assets the Ota farmer, OBJ had gifted to his cronies and friends under the guise of privatization. The late university lecturer-turned president did so many other wonderful things. He gave love to Nigerians and got the same love in return.
Members of Boko haram once rated the deadliest terror group are being released from prison and gifted with a juicy amnesty package and fulani herdsmen once rated the 4th deadliest terror group got 1 billion naira in the 2016 budget and are currently being protected by a strong army taskforce which Buhari himself donned a military fatigue for the very first time in over 3 decades to launch, a day after these fulani criminals killed not less than 81 people in Benue state.January 9th, 2016, members of IPOB had gathered inside a school field in Abia state, to pray for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. They were not blocking any road, they were not even on the street. They were inside a school field singing praises to their God. (I have the video) Yet, Buhari's uniformed murderers invaded their praying space, took positions as though they were targeting ISIS terrorists and opened fire on these unarmed prayer-chanting Igbo son and daughters and parents. At the end of the Rain Of Bullets, dozens lay lifeless while hundreds were injured

On the night of May 29th, 2016, IPOB members had gathered inside a church in Onitsha to remember Biafra heroes but right inside this Christian holy place of worship, Buhari's killing machine came visiting. There, dozens of IPOB were killed, most of them in their sleep, according to a detailed report released by Amnesty International. On the 30th, these same uniformed vampires went to different locations in Onitsha and killed hundreds of IPOB members (Amnesty International put the figure at not less than 150 but suggested it could be far higher than that) and bathed others with raw acid to ensure they die a very slow but painful death.
After killing these unarmed non-violent IPOB members and spraying others with acid, this same army burnt the dead bodies of these IPOB members to conceal evidence of their savagery and even started going from hospital to hospital arresting the injured and taking them to undisclosed locations. Don't take my word for it. Please search for that Amnesty Int
Now, here is where it gets worse, during a live aljazeera interview, an Aljazeera Journalist wanted Muhammadu Buhari to watch the video of the murderous activities of his soldiers against IPOB but this conscience-less man refused. In fact, his countenance changed the moment the woman mentioned the topic. But Buhari proved to the whole world that he is completely deaf, dumb and blind to the sanctity of the life of the human person by refusing to watch that video.
When Bridgette Agbohime was butchered by Islamic fundamentalists in Kano, did Buhari not imply she was killed for disrespecting Islam? Were her killers not set free by the sharia govt of Kano state
I respect the office of the president but I don't respect a president who takes great joy in butchering his own people. The old man is just a hopeless Islamic fundamentalist

Is it Fulani herdsmen killing and destroying houses and farms? Is the changing of departments and agencies for the officers that were found guilty of budge padding rather than making them to face prosecution? Is it the untold herdship and suffering he inflicted on the masses? Is it the lopsided appointments? Is it the victimization of ethnic and political enemies? Is it the disobedience to the rule of law? Is it the neglect for our constitution? Is it the disuniting of the nation like never before, that will soon break up the country completely? Where do we start and where do we end? Young men and ladies, adult and children, irrespective of our ethnic, religious and political differences, let's always speak the truth no matter whose horse is gored. 26. Problem with most of us responding is that we remain I election campaign mode with many not accepting the election has been won and lost. We have decided to remain divided along ethnic and religious divide.
What projects should be considered as short term that should have been completed within two years that have not been completed? Roads and Railway projects or Bridges? Could the Abuja - Lokoja road, the East - West Road, the Onitsha - Owerre road, the 2nd Niger Bridge have all been completed in two years?
The fighht agaainst corruption. Has any Nigerian ever known that Judges, Lawyers, Bankers, Directors General of Government Agencies and Corporations, Ministers and. Big Time Politicians ever stole monet and. Involved in deeply-rooted corrupt practices? Who ever knnew that our National Budgets were consistently padded by both. Chambers of the National Assembly?
The fight against insurgency and vandalizing of Gas Pipelines in the North East and Niger Deta respectively have been waged; is there any sincere Nigerian that would say successes hhave not been recorded?
On Power supply. The previous administration, in its determination to "produce" Billionaires in this country, sold the Power Sector to its cronies who, according to recent revelations, didn't know what they were going into. Their motive for the "purchase" was the cash flow which was guaranteed by te government. It is true too that when "buying" the Sector, Government of former President dipped its hands into government till and paid for tem with Taxpayers money. So, the decision to sell the sector has brought us to this position. Who's to blame?
The scam on Arms by our Armed Forces. I need not rearsh here as what has happened in past years is as bright as daybreak. The issue is still being tackked. Who would say this administration has done nothing about the Defense looting? Could we ever have known of. The dastadlyu actions of our past Military Chiefs? Has the government not scored any marks here?
Diverciffiction of the mono economy. Has there not been appreciabe success?
Like. I said, only those people hurting today because of Buhari's policies (because of plugging the leakages they hda benefitted) are angry and therefore scoring the administration low. For us, we thank God for the change and we are willing to make further sacrifices. God bless Nigeria.

  28. JONATHAN SPEAKS OUT...
I Didn't Hand Over A Collapsed Nation To
    Buhari - Dr. Goodluck Jonathan!!!
    Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has
replied his critics who accused him of handing
over a nation at the verge of collapse to his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari.
Jonathan recounted the achievements of his
government to include, handing over a
country that produced the richest man in
    Africa.
Jonathan said, “I took over a Nigeria that was the second largest economy in Africa
with a GDP of $270.5 billion in 2009, I handed
over a Nigeria that had grown to become the
largest economy in Africa and the 24th
largest economy in the World with a GDP of $
574 billion. “I inherited a Nigeria in which the trains
were not working, and handed over a
Nigeria in which citizens can safely travel by
trains again. I also inherited a country where
illiteracy rate particularly in the Northern
part was alarming. I handed over a country where every state in the North and indeed
all the states had a Federal University. I
inherited a country where there was total
infrastructural decay in all the unity schools
and colleges of education. But I handed over a
country with massive infrastructural improvement in almost higher institutions. I
inherited a country where agricultural inputs
and production were almost zero. But I
handed over a country where a bag of rice
was sold for N6,500 to N7000. My regime
since the establishment of ecological fund office did more irrigation dams in the North
and other parts of the country than other
    subsequent administrations put together. I
inherited epileptic fuel supplies resulting to
endless queues at the filling stations. I
maintained despite enormous challenges of fuel subsidies and handed over a relatively
    stable fuel regime.
I inherited a Nigeria that was a net importer
of cement, and handed over a Nigeria that is
    a net exporter of cement.
In 2009 the richest Nigerian was the 5th richest man in Africa, but I handed over a
Nigeria that produced the richest man in
    Africa.
The former President further stated " I
inherited a country where people were
almost losing hope on the credibility of its electoral process but I noticed that
democracy will continue to grow in the
African continent if leaders value the process
of elections more than the product of the
process. I handed over electoral process that
engendered fairness in its conduct and conclusiveness ".
He said, “Even in the 2015 general elections
in my country, Nigeria, there was potential
for major crisis if I was not a President duly
elected by the will of the people.
“The campaigns leading to the elections almost polarized the country into Christian vs
Muslims and North vs South divide.
Most World leaders were worried that our
elections will result into major crisis.
Some pundits even from here in the United
States said that those elections would spell the end of Nigeria and that we would cease
to exist as a nation because of the polls.
That is where the leadership question comes
    into play.
As a leader that was duly elected by the
people, I considered the people’s interest first.
How do I manage my people to avoid killings
    and destruction of properties?
With the interest of the people propelling all
the decisions I took, we were able to sail
through. Indeed, we sailed through because I refused
to interfere with the independence of the
    Independent National Electoral Commission,
INEC, having appointed a man I had never
met in my life to run it. We sailed through
because I maintained and still believe that my personal ambition, interest is not worth
the blood of any single Nigerian.
My philosophy was simple. For elections to
be credible, I as a leader, must value the
process more than the product of the process.
And the citizens must have confidence in the electoral body.
Pls circulate it for them to know.

    1. We all voted GEJ in 2011 but the christains later claimed the glory. The South believed that North wil never produce eligible Buhari again because PDP believe that nobody is worthy of leading opposition against them other than Buhari hence they ended up stigmatising him with religious fanatism, tribalism etc. PDP uses religion to campaign thereby creating division in Nigeria. Buhari only inherited fractured Nigeria which he had been trying to amend.

  29. He (Buhari) has done wonders to the country, because Nigeria was already at the precipice and was just about to be declared a failed state. Looking from where he took Nigeria, there is no doubt that he did a marvelous job. But to explain this, one needs to have concrete proofs, and here they are.

On insurgency, wailers always point out that nothing significant has changed which is clearly untrue. In 2009 when the insurgency in the Northeast of Nigeria started, deaths recorded were less than 500. In 2010, due to the effectiveness of the counter-insurgency program of the Yar'adua regime, deaths recorded fell to less than 100. GEJ became president in 2010 and was reelected in 2011, after the demise of Yar'adua (may his soul rest in peace). In 2012 insurgency resurged with a virulent force that became very deadly. Over 500 lives were lost in 2012. When the course of year 2013 was ran, some 5000 lives were officially lost. At this point, GEJ was insinuated to aid the insurgents with weapons cos they grew so bold that no security position is safe from their wrath. Army barracks were ransacked, Airforce bases were vandalized, and our respected security forces were running away from battle when confronted by a rag tag army of insurgents. In 2014, Bokoharam declared its first caliphate in the town of Gwoza, and the location of their headquarter was a Police Training Institute. At the end of 2014 Bokoharam was controlling territories equal to some countries. Over 20,000 deaths occurred in that year with the displacement of over 3 million people. That is the worst catastrophe that has befallen Nigeria since the end of the civil war. The famous Chibok girls were abducted that year. Male children in a boarding school in Buniyadi were not so lucky to have been kidnapped; they were slain in their hostels. I shudder to imagine what would have happened if GEJ was reelected.

In 2015, it became clear to GEJ he was going to lose the whole North, and by implication, reelection, because the Northerners felt he had betrayed them. They cited his nonchalant and insouciance attitude on their travails. Selling him as a candidate to the North was an impossibility, and that was not helped by the utterances of his wife, Dame Patient Jonathan. Desperate to keep power, GEJ employed all the tactics to win some hearts in the North. He sponsored religious write-ups to weep up sentiments among the northern minorities, offered huge sum of money in dollars, paid visits to some flash point areas where he never went while the insurgency rages, he constructed dozens of Almajiri Schools and commission more universities in the North; but all will not bring back the tranquility that was once the signature
mark of the North back, nor will it restore light where darkness has been casted. The minds of the Northerners was angered and it is with that anger that they all went to the polls. The rest is now history.

In 2015, deaths related to insurgency dropped to just under 1000. It must be emphasized that, towards the 2015 election, all reports and polls indicated discontent with GEJ due to his handling of the insurgency in the Northeast. Recognizing a defeat forthcoming in the elections, GEJ coerced INEC (using insecurity as a basis) to postponed elections by six weeks, six weeks which the security operatives used to show some effectiveness in the counter insurgency war, a vigour which was lacking in the nearly six years that he could have done something. The remainder of 2015 was under Buhari who on being sworn in as the President of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria, moved the coordination base of the counter insurgency efforts from Abuja to Maiduguri, the epicenter of war. That was remarked to be a game changer and is directly associated with reduction of deaths in 2015. Read more...
