Femi Fani-Kayode: Coup bells ringing and why Nigerians must be concerned

I am very worried now. Ever since 1966 the northern ruling class has ALWAYS effected a coup d’etat whenever they feel sufficiently threatened with the loss of power.

The only time that they failed to do this, to their eternal regret, was when President Goodluck Jonathan succeeded President Umaru Yar'adua after the latter’s death in 2010.

Up until today they blame my friend and brother Lt. Abdulrahman General Dambazau for that failure and they felt he was weak and cowardly. This is because he was the Chief of Army Staff at the time and he did not strike.

He paid a heavy price for his “weakness” and for not doing their bidding a few years later because when Buhari came to power in 2015 instead of appointing him Minister of Defence or National Security Advisor, which is what he had originally been penned down for, he appointed him as Minister of Interior which is far less strategic and important.

As a consequence of his “failure” to strike they had to endure Jonathan for 5 long years and their response was to covertly support and encourage Boko Haram to make parts of the country “ungovernable” and to organise the whole Chibok girls affair, in collusion with a notable foreign intelligence agency and foreign Government, to get him out by 2015.

President Muhammadu Buhari was “elected” into office that year and now his fate is similar to Yar’Adua’s. He is chronically ill and he is NOT coming back to lead and rule as he once did because he will NEVER be the same again.

Once he dies the northern ruling class have already decided on what to do. They will give Vice President Yemi Osinbajo an ultimatum and they will threaten him and ask him to resign.
They have resolved that they will not allow power to go to the south and they will encourage their senior officers in the military to effect a coup.

In doing so they are only doing what they have ALWAYS done when they feel sufficiently threatened with the loss of power. That is their way. And that is the measure of their ruthlessness and determination to hold on to power.
They would rather have a core northern military dictator in power than a southern leader or President. And they are prepared to kill anyone, no matter how highly placed, who stands in their way or who attempts to oppose or stop them.

The only options that exist if they are to be stopped is, firstly, if someone beats them to it by effecting a “progressive” Rawlings, Orkar or Nzeogwu-type coup of junior southern and Middle Belt officers. This would lead to massive loss of life and to civil war and it is therefore unacceptable.

The other option is for the southern and Middle Belt civilian population to come together and march the streets in an attempt to resist military insurrection and mutiny in the name of fighting for and attempting to preserve democracy.

That would be the best option but sadly we do not have a very good track record when it comes to protesting against injustice and the truncation of democracy and this is especially so because the core north will openly support the coup and hail it.

However one thing is clear this time around: if a coup led and inspired by the core north and the FN takes place simply to keep a southerner out of power it will signal the end of Nigeria as a united country.
Such is the anger and frustration in the south and Middle Belt today about the excesses, abuses of power, wickedness, bondage and arrogance of the north that there is likely to be a very violent reaction to any northern coup.
This may well lead to the disintegration of the Federation and when it gets to that point even the army will be hard pressed to keep us together as one nation.
The likelihood is that it would lead to a second civil war because even the army would be split down the middle along regional, ethnic and religious lines.

That is the catastrophe, madness, chaos and carnage that the northern ruling class are now leading us to and toying with in their insane quest to hold on to power. That is where they are pushing us to with their obsessive and insatiable appetite and lust for that power.

It is for this reason that the plan by the cabal in Buhari’s government and the northern ruling elite to effect a coup in order to keep power for themselves and their people and to stop a southerner from enjoying it must be condemned and resisted by ALL men and women of goodwill.

And as we condemn it we must prepare for a very strong reaction to it (and not just with loud and empty words) when they strike.

We must be ready to put our money where our mouth is. We must be prepared to risk our lives. We must be prepared to fight back and resist them with guns and bullets and every fibre of our being.
We must not let them steal our country from us right under our noses and deny us the right to wield power as the constitution dictates.

We must not let them abort democracy even though Buhari’s rule can hardly be described as one and would be better described as a murderous and despotic civilian dictatorship.

  1. Femi Fani Kayode has too much of a big mouth and all he does is predict worthless and aimless dispositions with no basis and no evidences. He just talks and talks without thinking twice. His hatred for the North is well-portrayed and he has been an advocate of dividing the country for long. Shove your mouth up your *** and go to hell fani kayode. By God's grace Buhari will come back and will finish his term and your rotten mouth will continue to rot.

  2. I actually share fani-Kayode's view on the obsession to power of the northern ruling class. I think marriage called Nigeria is better dissolved at this point of our national life except if it's not the will of Hos almighty. We are not one and will likely not be one in ideology, value, etc. I am offended in the way the present Nigeria treats the Igbo clan, although I am a bonafide Yoruba man. Rather than hold some others hostage in their own country and keep lording things over them is it not better to break this entity called Nigeria ans everyone can concentrate their energies into development etc. We can't keep leaving like this, Nigeria is not one, it's presently oppressive , evil in her structure and ungodly because even the bible says to to deprive men justice He do not approve of it., I knew Buhari et al as the leaders of our nation while I was 8, I am now 40 and these set of lords will not allow progress, they are weak from their brain to their heart and in their result, if truly they could change anything they would have done. I am not tired of praying for a country that dispels righteousness as if one pours water at eye nack of a dock. If it cannot work, let's do our separate ways, after all it was lord luggard that married us and not God, what Luggard joined together can be put asunder in 2017 and heaven will not fall nor are we against the purposes of God. 3. You can call the man whatever suits your fancy. I am not a Fani Kayode fan and have very little patience for the man. However on this one, it will pay to listen. The utterances and speeches coming from northern elders show clearly their lust for power. As it stands, the health and well-being of d president is of little importance. Who is on d sit of power worries them more. It is unfortunate that this part of the country has ruled dis nation for over 25years, but they think it is a right of theirs to hold on to power.

Zoning was an evil plan hatched to achieve the benefits of a few. It has not worked and won't work. If we do not allow d best man come power, we will continue experiencing sick men and incompetent people because that's d best that region has to offer us.

  4. When truth is been spoken there must be people who don't just like truth but do know what happens to them that call evill good, woe to them..but I still believe that wickedness endureth not forever..what fani kayode just us absolutely true but I know their plans will never be accomplish..There is only one man that owns all power.he's Abaa father The king of kings.

  5. as much as i hate this guy..I compare him to fayose in the mental way but...i'm afraid to say i agree with some of his points. The northern people must sit at the back, Nigeria isnt a property allocated to them. If they want Nigeria, they can have the name and we break off from it. We would call ourselves something else. Thats the solution to this madness we are facing in this country. I fear one day, the masses would take over and lots of innocent lives would be destroyed cuz of greedy, selfish, callous and mindless animals that would benefit from the chaos.. i've lost faith in this country since My dear President got surrounded by hyenas and wolves..

  6. So FKK can still talk to win some gullible people. People that have access to Internet. I weep for this category of people not necessarily weeping for this country because even if Buhari dies Nigeria can never go back to the way it was during PDP era and Osinbajo will finish this four year tenure.
However for the North retaining the power, that will be determined by election. If APC field Osinbajo and the opponent field a strong northerner, there is every probability that the east will pay back to support the Northerner so as to have their way to presidency by 2023. But the prophet of doom FKK will be shamed whatever happens.

  8. I never thought some people can still be fooled by the likes of fani kayode and fayose after all their hate campaign against PMB in the build up to the 2015 general elections,a lot has changed now,I don't believe the north is the problem of Nigeria, our problem is purely lack of visionary leaders,Mr gbenga from the UK,I live in Nigeria,it is totally wrong that the igbos are marginalized, they should hold their leaders responsible, all the 35 states governors go cap in hand to collect federal allocations every month, the sharing formula will no longer work,we need a situation where all the states will control their resources and contribute to the centre, that will bring about prosperity in all the regions and the federal power will be less attractive,we gain more together,we lose all divided, disintegration is not in the best interest of the nation,we are not the most populous nation on earth.#mythought.

  9. I still insist our leaders in all the ethnic and geo political zones are our problem, even if Nigeria disintegrate today we still have them to control each region, what will you say of a governor who prefer to buy a private jet than to pay workers meagre salaries, the solution is a paradigm shift from the status quo,a new way of thinking, akpabio built a multi billion naira hospital but fly abroad to treat headache,we need to curb wastages, there are more private jets in Nigeria than the whole of Africa,we need to direct our policies for the betterment of all and not a selected few,we need to improve on infrastructure especially power, roads and railways.#mythought.

  11. Some of you have made some valid point, but all i want all of us to know is that yes there have been evidence that some high ranking officers from the north where actually planning coup just to make sure the north remian in power

    1. The North doesn't need coup to retain power as far as democracy remain game of numbers. The North till now remain more politically stronger than any other zone of this country. They see themselves politically as one with almost 19 States while the southern Nigeria will ever remain Ibos and Yorubas with 17 states to share.

    2. Deceive yourself. The north needs a part if the south the achieve success in elections. Real elections will not produce 2 million votes in Katsina whilst Lagos gets 1.5 million and Ogun State with 300,000
