VP Osinbajo inaugurates task force to reduce food prices

Moved by the need to enhance affordability of food prices across country, the Buhari administration has constituted a Presidential Task Force to urgently consider measures that would ensure a steady flow of produce to the market and reverse recent price increases.

Giving the directive Wednesday at the Federal Executive Council meeting, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, expressed concern at some of the inflationary rates of food prices, noting that the Task Force will explore options to promote availability and affordability of food items to Nigerians.

According to him, the Task Force, which has seven days from Wednesday to report back to the Council, will consider how to remove some of the cost-raising factors that come into play between the farms and the markets and therefore “bring relief to our people.”

While there have been reports of bumper harvests in parts of the country, the prices of food stuff still end up rather high, while some of the produce even end up wasted due to a number of reasons preventing effective transportation delivery to the markets.

One of the focus areas of the Task Force, the Ag. President noted, would be to review the transportation and preservation processes, and see how government can intervene in those aspects to bring down food prices.

The Task Force, which would be meeting with the Ag. President in the discharge of its urgent assignment, will therefore draw out a practical plan and present same to the Council next week.

Members of the Task Force include the following:

Minister of Agriculture & Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh

Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun

Minister of Industry, Trade & Development, Dr. Okey Enelamah

Minister of Transportation, Honorable Rotimi Amaechi

Minister for Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu

Minister of Labour & Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige

The Offices of the Chief of Staff to the President and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, would also be on the Task Force.

  1. Bunch of failures as tax force committee. Build roads from the rural areas to the urban cities, help farmers with loan facilities and fertilizers to help them boost production. Farmers are not greedy. But cost of farming is on high rate and farm produce get spoilt easily due to bad roads. Anyways. Let hear what they come up with next week.

  3. When these stuff were produced at a very high cost, you want the price to be reduced now. At the detriment of who? The farmers? Wickedness! Consider making farm imputes available and every other thing the next planting season and then control prices not just of food items, but every other thing. That's when you will think of controlling prices of food items.
If reduce prices of food items now, farmers will sell and in turn, not afford other needed items for themselves which will be on the high.

  5. Where is the task force for fuel which Senate said should sell for not more than 70 naira? Where is the task for for all the illegal charges collected on petroleum product that NPA and co still charges and have been budgeted for in the budget? VP you professorship is like an undeserved title on you. Why do they always send you on these kind of errands?

  6. So even Osibanjo is one of those who put this country in this mess. Osibanjo please answer these questions:(1) If a farmer wants to buy beverage s, will they get it cheaper because they are farmers? (2) When a farmer wants to pay school fees of his children, will pay less than others because he is a farmer? (3) when a farmer wants to board a vehicle to bring his farm produce to where he will sell it, will he pay less fare for bing a farmer? Am not surprised the country is where it is today with people who take this kind of decisions. The reduction and price regulation has to start with petrol, kerosene, gas, NPHCN bill, stamp duty etc. The country is a capitalist state and not a socialist neither is it a communist one where the government determines the prices of goods and services. In capitalist state, the forces of demand and supply determine the prices.

  9. It is true that this administration has nothing for nigerians. Osinbajo you need to really soberly sit down, fast like never before and ask God to show you and your team the way forward. The people you have chosen are bunch of failures who cannot see beyond their noses. You want farmers to reduce the prices of their farm produce, have you reduced the one from your farm? (price of petroleum products)! tax on imported goods - like cars, tractors, spare parts? has other manufacturers reduced what they produce?, has Land lords reduced the price of accommodation? what about transportation fares? cost of fertilizers? school fees in higher institutions?
Don't be skewed in your thinking and your actions!

  10. What would this magic of essential commodity reductions entail? All eyes are watching. Petrol is skyrocketing, ordinary man cannot afford to buy firewood, kerosene, no way, electricity , zero, road, forget it, believe me, without argument all and more due to government inability to govern with fear of God contributed to what we are going through in this country. It's a pity indeed. Once again, Nigerians are tired.
