How we plan to reduce food prices - FG

The Federal Government of Nigeria says it has adopted some measures to reduce the price of food items.

This was revealed by the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, on Wednesday while addressing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council, FEC.

The Council had last week set up a task force to advise the government on how best to address the rising cost of food items across the country.

Mr. Ogbeh said the task force submitted an interim report to the council on Wednesday. He said the committee had identified that the hike in cost is “not due to shortage but high cost of transportation”.

He said food items are generally moved across Nigeria with heavy trucks and the price of diesel which has gone up has therefore, led to increase in prices.

He said the government had therefore, decided to “start using railway wagons to transport food items.”

The minister said the use of wagons to transport cattle from the north to Lagos has already greatly helped in reducing cost and will be replicated in food distribution.

“We will also work with state governments to reduce delays experienced by trucks along the roads through all sort of taxes by local governments,” he said.

Mr. Ogbeh also said the government has decided to adopt the “Ivory Coast model” in which trucks distributing food items are given special labels.

  4. It is high time Mr. president start looking for those that will help him actualize his dreams for Nigeria than continue with these out-of-ideas men. Tell me, they only saw hike in fares as the only cause to hike in food prices. I then wonder the applicability of what they have seen as the solution.
These men must be shown the way out as their ideas are not in line with the current reality.

  7. The solution does not lie on transport alone; we still have shortage of food in Nigeria as a result of blotted population with few hands working. It is only the government that drive the private sector for optimal production and until they do so there will be shortage of food.

  8. I've said this times without number that these people in the committee cannot see beyond their nose. This is just the confirmation. They are in Abuja claiming that the price of cow meat/beef has gone down in Lagos. That is a blatant lie as the price keeps increasing everyday. Any meat be it cow or poultry/livestock and fish is too costly in any of the markets in Lagos. The panel members are liars and are yet to wake up to reality of things - they are still sleeping. Cost of transportation is part of it but not the major factor. What about other contributing factors like cost of labour, livestock feeds, fertilizers, agro-petrochemicals, cost of storage and cost of preservation, and finally, cost of other commodities that farmers will buy after selling their produce at reduced price? Who will pay for the difference or subsidize the prices of those items? Audu Ogbe is one way sided. He should be thorough and keen on the analysis of issues before drawing up a cosmetic approach to this problem.

  9. I think the best way out of this thing is to stop thinking that anything good can come out of this party and we focus on managing the little resources we have and pray that God should bless the work of our hands.

They have failed in all sectors except boko haram dept. Not only that people are suffering, no light no money to buy foods, youths loosing jobs as coys are folding up- Nigeria has never had it this bad. The last time this country witness this kind of thin is 1984, when this same man was in power.

    God save us o
