FG gives update on professor who claimed HIV cure discovery

The Federal Government has frowned at the claim by Professor Maduike Ezeibe, who claimed to have discovered a cure for HIV/AIDs.

Ezeibe, a researcher in Veterinary Medicine of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Abia State, claimed the drug, which was produced with “Aluminium Magnesium Silicate” has allegedly cured 10 persons living with HIV.

But the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, told State House reporters on Wednesday that the research was carried out without any valid ethical approval.

The minister said: “On the issue of HIV (cure claim), we are yet to get the final report from the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute for Medical Research.

“But what is clear is that those activities were carried out without a valid ethical approval. As you might be aware, nobody is allowed to carry out any expedient or research on human beings without an ethical approval.

“At the National Health Research Committees level, there is no evidence that this researcher sought and obtained ethical approval. But at the appropriate time, we will disclose the full report.”

Similarly, the National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA) had also refuted the claim by Ezeibe, saying that the claim for HIV/AIDS cure is not new.

  1. Can you not give him the "ethical approval" now so that he is given the chance to do it over?
It would be critically unfair to hurriedly sweep his effort under the proverbial carpet.

    1. This man knew the ethics of his profession and deliberately sidelined it. Why, if he is really confident of his discovery? We should stop defending wrong, purely out of sentiment. It's like someone driving without a driving license. He gets caught and you ask "Can't you now give him the driving license?" No civilised society operates that way.

    2. Did he drive the vehicle yes, did he,crash the vehicle no he only made the public to know he can drive and the authority stopped him because he has no lincese to drive, please give the man a chance to prove himself we (Nigeria) can do it I believe in us.

    3. So we can scrap the entire driving test procedure and just wait for people to drive a vehicle and not crash it? So once they drive a few kilometers without a crash, they can be handed a license? No need to know the Highway Code. No need for a vision test? Fine. When you establish your own country, you can adopt that policy for it!

    4. I am impressed by the above 3 comments. My people are thinking, and thinking deep! Please keep it coming!

  2. Pls don't not blame d researcher if the medical council has prior to this time lived up to expectation the researcher will not dare to carry on with the research without appropriate approvals. However, if the country knows the important of the discovery the researcher will be encouraged to continue. This was how we condemed aba made goods but buy China fake products. This was how we did not develop our palm oil and have been over taken by other nations. Our slogan should be "Nigeria First.

  3. The regulatory bodies in Nigeria are bedevilled with the typical national problem- corruption! May be that is why the vet prof didn't bother to follow that path. However he is not claiming to my understanding that he has 'drug' is "an ethical preparation" . His finding is just like most 'concoctions' Nigerians buy and consume for various ailments from vendors across the country. It can now be subjected to an appropriate scientific analysis. And that, takes a lot of time.
