Saraki flags off Made-In-Nigeria competition

Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Monday, flagged off a Made-in-Nigeria challenge, aimed at creating “legislative instruments that encourage local manufacturers by getting information to ensure ease of doing business”.

He made the announcement via his twitter handle, where he also stated that in the next few weeks, products that have the potential to grow business, expand market and create jobs would be selected to meet with business owners, investor and government agencies in order to grow them.

By March 2017, Saraki said some of the finalists in the challenges would be invited for a Made in Nigeria round-table at the Senate.

Participants in the challenge are expected to shoot a short video of 45 seconds to 3-minutes showcasing their products or services that serve as alternative to imported ones.

Economic Recession

With the crash in oil prices, in a country that has solely relied on oil as a major source of revenue, the Federal Government of Nigeria has since began to look for alternative sources of revenue generation for the nation.

Areas such as agriculture and manufacturing, have proven to be the most viable means of resuscitating the nation’s economy from what has been described as the worst recession in Nigeria’s history.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, had expressed commitment of the Federal Government to developing local capacity, by using made in Nigeria items in national building plans.

The recent move by the Senate President seems to be a sure sign that the government is indeed set to improve the manufacturing sector, as well as create an enabling environment for entrepreneurship.

It is set to improve the quality of made in Nigeria goods in order to make them attractive for export into the international market.

  1. Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Monday, flagged off a Made-in-Nigeria challenge. Sounds great but we need constant supply of electricity to enable us produce our own product as cheap as possible. Most of overhead cost of many manufactures are cost of fuel. Stop talking big and start doing meaningful job on infrastructure.

  3. Growth without Electricity is an ordinary talk. Give Nigeria uninterrupted supply of electricity and see what Nigerians are capable of doing.

  4. But Electricity development is part of the campaign ,a country where every thing to generate power including electric bulb is imported cannot have steady power ,when you buy foreign machine parts, you also dpend on foreign technology to run it .
My openion is that made in Nigeria can be successfull if PHD is fully sponsored by government .If PHD is sponsored then we can boast of authentic and reliable research that is applicable on industrial scale .some inovatiins cannot be commercialized no matter how inovative .Building an effective research culture will take us out of the woods of dependency on foreign technology .for example ,if we make our power sockets unique and make our houses have appliances as our custom design .it will be easy to create a market for local sockets becaus it is only in Nigeria that such is used ,but if we continue using universal sockets ,it will always be better to import than to manufacture .bigger international coperations will always dominate in producing cheaper products for export .
Another suggestion is to make sure that all government products and consumables are localy sourced ,iNigerians are good followers, whatever our elites and politicians use are what the masses crave for .let's use peugeot for example ,when government was using the car model ,it became the dream of every Nigerian to have a peugeot. so if our leaders build houses with local made furnitures ,the masses will follow ,its simple
