Picture of the day: Reverend father in church with rifle

A photo depicting a clergyman dressed in a purple-and-white cassock with a rifle cradled in his arms has gone viral.

The photo was apparently taken in a church.

He appeared to have posed for the camera, maintaining a sombre mien, close to an altar bedecked in white and purple clothes and a pair of glasses sitting on it.

The picture was posted online by a Facebook user, Achike Onwuazo.

In the post, Onwuazo alluded to the priest’s readiness against any Boko Haram or herdsmen attack.

Onwuazo wrote, “Carry go, my blessed Rev. Father. He who is surrounded by his enemies (Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram) is always alert.

“That’s the latest way forward.”

Other Facebook users praised the priest for arming himself.

One Ayalogu Emmanuel called for the enactment of a law allowing civilians to use heavy firearms.

“Please, how can I get my own AK-47 rifle? The National Assembly should be thinking of passing a bill to legalise the use of machine guns,” he said.

Another commenter, Meg Barn, said it would be a good idea to not only arm church priests but also the parishioners.

“Watch and pray; they (religious leaders) should arm their parishioners too. There is no church without the laity,” she said.

Commending the priest in the picture, a Facebook user, Achukwu Achike, also said, “Very good; God help those who help themselves.”

Igwe Murphy Okwudili, stated, “That will deter them (herdsmen) from constantly invading people’s lands and property.”

But another user of the social media platform, Halliday Charles, said, “God doesn’t help those who help or can help themselves. God helps the helpless; God defends the defenceless. The strength of God is made perfect in our weakness.”

In August last year, a Catholic seminarian, Lazarus Nwafor, was killed during the invasion of Attakwu community by armed herdsmen.

The seminarian was murdered during an early morning attack on the community, which is located in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

  1. Mr. Halliday Charles, it seems you are still living in the past. That is why they keep on killing Christians because they are waiting for God to protect them. Those those people that are doing the killings, did they tell that they don't have God? Dey dia day wait for God to come down from heaven and protect you. Let me tell you, the day of Manner Falling down From heaven was a very long time over pls.

  2. I think some Christians have lost touch with their creator, otherwise it is shear madness to do this. And you call yourself man of God???
Please quote for from the Bible where you were thought to do this. This is absolute animalistic idea. The Christians in Nigeria are completely confused. Thank God, hence forth we will now know what they use our tithe collections for. God is on the throne.

    1. @Mike Itolowo. I have a question for you. In Mark 14:47. Where did one of the disciples got the sword he used to cut one of the soldiers ear who came to arrest Jesus. It shows that he was armed with a sword. Read your Bible very well before criticizing.

    2. Mr Mark 14:47. Having a sword then is like a farmer carrying a cutlass. But did you read Jesus response to that action in Matt 26:52,53? If translated now mean this Rambo of a priest will die by AK47 it one arms related circumstances. Like you said READ YOUR BIBLE VERY WELL B4 CRITICIZING.LOL

  6. 9:14am if Christians want to defend themselves they should do that and it should be done according to law. Not for a priest or a pastor to hang a riffle on his shoulder and hold the bible with his hand. Who is he preaching to dress like that? Churches should go for security back up by inviting mobile police or police in casual wears to guide and protect the church not for church members to carry gun all about. When Jesus Christ was arrested and taking away,do you think he can't resist the arrest or fight them with the twelve disciples? Of course he can. But he never did that for peace to reign and for the scripture to be fulfilled. Bible says if you lose your life for God you sure gain it back. That does not mean you should kill or pay evil with evil or blood for blood. Never did God or the scripture says that. Instead preach peace and embrace unity. And leave vengeance to God to have the final say over all atrocities by the fulani herdsmen. Want to safe guard your church and members invite the police to ptotect lives and properties. If we allow boko haram and these fulani herdsmen achieve their goals. Then we all should be ready for religious war. Cos that is what they are indirectly agitating for. One love keep us all to

    1. This guy is a joker. The mobile policeman that is a northern muslim extremist would kill you first before the herdsmen arrive. There are no rules of engagement in this battle. Have you heard of any man that met a DPO and was selecting the policeman that should be sent to protect him? I only have one thing against the Pastors/Priests speaking now. When the parishioners were being attacked at their homes for years, the Priests/Pastors said nothing. Now that their investment is being attacked (church premise) they now tell the parishioners to retaliate. They should follow in the footsteps of Baba Adeboye who maintained the same disposition when his members and his church was attacked. Even when the female evangelist was beheaded, he maintained public silence. However, we should remember that till today and till next tomorrow no northern Muslim would ever be sentenced for that woman's death if the church continues to stay mute. In my opinion, ARM THE PEOPLE FIRST BEFORE YOU ARM THE PRIESTS... LET THE CHURCH LEAD AN ATTACK. CAN should come out and request that Islamic leadership call their faithful to order otherwise they would request a full retaliation of Christians in Nigeria. The problem is that CAN is easy to bribe. One "ghana must go" and one private jet ride and CAN would forget why they exist in Nigeria.

    2. Just because Buhari is the president. Nawaoo.
Pipeline bombing doesn't suffice enough disturbance again. Highjacking of economy not enough, Buhari is still pulling ahead, now drumming of religious war.
Nobody will answer. Buhari will finish his GOD appointed time.
The Northerners are wiser now than you think.

  8. Christians all over the nation, repent of your sinful ways and return to your God. Then hand over the battle to him and He will surely fight for you for the battle is the LORD's. I bet you, you do not have the heartless heart these people display and you also do not have the weapons at their disposal. Return to your God in repentance and He will surely fight for you. Remember, whenever the Israelites sinned, He handed them over to their adversaries to be ill-treated.
This is not a matter of 'fire for fire' (by the way your fire cannot match theirs). Return to your Maker in holiness and righteousness, in sincerity and in truth and leave the rest for HIM.

    2. Understand the context of a write-up before commenting. Otherwise, I think, it is more noble to be silent and not confuse people unnecesarily.
The write-up means that Christians are not given to weapons like people who derive joy and fulfillment in shedding innocent blood - that is the meaning of "your fire cannot match theirs."
