The incumbent President of Gambia, Yahaya Jammeh who had called his opponent, Adama Barrow in the last week’s General election in the country to concede defeat after losing in a shocking move rejected the entire election today, calling for fresh poll. In a surprising somersault, Jammeh, who has ruled Gambia for 22 years, announced on state TV that he was rejecting the result, which he accepted last week as reflective of the wish of the people of Gambia. He now called for a fresh election.
The ECOWAS Commission, the African Union Commission and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, have called on the Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh to respect the verdict of the ballot and hand over to the President-elect, Adama Barrow.
