Violation of speed regulation drops to 26.6% – FRSC

Federal Road Safely Corps (FRSC), says violation of speed regulation dropped from 34.2 per cent in 2012 to 26.5 per cent in 2015 since the introduction of Speed Limiting Device in vehicles.


Mr Clement Oladele, Ogun State Sector Commander of FRSC, revealed the statistics during the 2016 Ember Months Campaign in Ota, Ogun, on Thursday.

He said excessive speeding can be said to be a major factor contributing to vehicle crashes on the roads in the country.

“When speed is high, it is difficult to control the vehicle, and this has contributed to over 65 per cent of crashes that involved commercial vehicles in the country’’, he said.

Oladele implored Nigerians to embrace the Speed Limiting Device in order to reduce crashes and achieve best practices on the roads. He also said that the full enforcement of the policy would commerce on Feb. 1, 2017.

Oladele said the FRSC had lined up activities to enlighten road users at Yuletide. “There is a perception that crashes tend to increase during the Ember Months.

“People always want to make more money during the Ember Months in order to meet their daily demands and this contributes to many of the accidents recorded on our roads’’, he said.

He urged road users to adhere strictly to average speed limit, avoid over-loading and desist from using expired tyres.

The campaign had “Crashing the crash: Speed kills’’, as its theme.
