2017 Budget: Defence, Interior, Education get highest allocations

Defence is one of the four sectors that got the highest recurrent allocation of a total of N465.87 billion in the 2017 budget that is before the National Assembly for consideration.

Minister of Budget and National Planning, Sen. Udoma Udoma, gave the breakdown at the public presentation of the 2017 budget proposals on Monday.

He said that the Ministry of Defence received N325.87bn as recurrent vote in the budget proposal.

It, however, came fourth in capital allocation with N140bn.

The Ministry of Interior got the highest recurrent allocation of N482.37bn and N63bn capital vote for the period.

The other sectors that got high allocation were Education, N398.01bn and Health with N252.86bn.

Udoma explained that defence and the three other sectors needed to be well financed because they employed large manpower and provided critical services to the nation.

In 2016, the defence got recurrent expenditure of N294.556bn and N134.572bn as capital vote.

N49.3bn was voted to the Ministry of Information and Culture in the 2017 Budget.

He said that the recurrent expenditure of the ministry would gulp N41bn.

The minister, who spoke during the question and answer session of the programme, had earlier apologised for the omission of the ministry’s budget in the original document earlier presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said that the estimate for capital expenditure for the ministry was N8.3bn.

In his remarks, the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Lai Mohammed, commended the media and other stakeholders in the ministry for their support and resilience in the discharge of their duties.

He said that the public presentation of the budget was among the platforms created by the government for stakeholder to come together to share ideas.

He said that it was also an opportunity for the public to understand the programme and activities of government.

He said, “Government must have a way of getting feedback of what is being done and that is why we started the town hall meetings.

“It is a platform to showcase what the government is doing and also to get feedback from members of the public.”
