Why big telecoms have to increase data tariffs - NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed the five big telecoms operators in the country to increase their data tariffs from Thursday, December 1.

The idea behind the rationale is  to allow small operators and new entrants to acquire market share and operate profitably.

An NCC official who confided in newsmen on Monday said the regulator came up with the new data regime after some new entrants into the market complained that there was no way they could break even if they operated on same data regime with the likes of MTN, Glo, Etisalat and Airtel.

He said NCC yielded to their pressure when last month it notified the operators of the new rate.

  1. This move is still part of antisocial media bill which the FG insist on doing last year. Nigerian be wise. APC is not comfortable with the social media and hence trikishly using every means to frustrate those against them.

  4. This is most absurd reason for such an unpopular action. The National Assembly should call these thoughtless people to order. Competition should favour the masses and not to subsidy inefficiency. How do you deepen Internet penetration with this baseless proposition. I guess NCC is misquoted

  5. New entrants like who and who??
May we know the owners of these new entrant companies? For them to be rich we the masses should become poorer? Buhari are u hearing that! Shortcut CORRUPTION!!!!

  7. What APC promised was change but Nigerians are not aware that the change is into HARDSHIP. Would the 5 big telecoms be ready to loose their customers to new entrants. This APC government is ready to destroy the masses. Nigerians beware.

  8. NCC, your reasons are useless and baseless. I blame Buhari and the Apc for this. They have being looking for a way to curtail or stop the social media platform from critising their misrule and cluelessness. Nigerians are not happy for this development.

  9. So , is the masses to pay for their inability to penetrate the market of their products? This can only happen in Nigeria!! It is an eye sore!! I weep for this country called Nigeria. W
Since we are now paying for small medium ISPs to be in business, then who will also help or assist the masses to buy data?

  11. Data na food if you can't afford it forget about it. If this move is going to make the new entrants into the sector keep their workers. And take some more jobless youths out of the street, let it be done.

  12. Nigerian government needs psychiatric care urgently. Not that you give these young or New entrants business incentives and support as in tax holidays, interest free loans etc you tell other companies to increase tarrif? Who increases tarrif for Etisalat to survive? Must you go into business were you have no advantage? Who is this stupid NCC that approved this nonsense? And they pay him like he'll for coming up with this stupid idea. Nigeria don finish.

  13. Those in NCC are old and working against the masses. They youth should wake up and take the country back from those bent on destroying the country and impoverished the people

  14. This new so called companies won't even employ Nigerians so why should we suffer for it? What rubbish are we even seeing in this country?

  15. This is very absurd. It is a pity that the NCC people lack business acumen by adopting tariff hike as the only palliative option for the incoming companies to survive. That means, there is no any guideline laid down by the NCC for licensing new telecom operators or that the guidelines are set aside to favour some to come into the business. So if iam going into transportation, The transport minister must enforce others to hike their fares for me to be able to compete favourably in the market! What type of economic sense is that? Did the NCC considered the effect of this on the existing companies that it can lead to closure of business or great downsize in these companies when their sales drops. The small companies that are in question seeking for this as solution, who are the owners or directors of these companies, what are there expansion plans? company like swift in Lagos is yet to actively and adequately cover the lagos mainland, the signal is very poor in Surulere despite the fact that one of their offices is rightly situated in Adeniran Ogunsanya, despite customers' complain, there is no significant improvement in their signal quality. They have no presence in Ikorodu and environs, Mowe, Ibafo,
Berger, Ojodu, Badagry etc. This is the inefficiency NCC wants us to pay higher tariff for! Is this the way the NCC is playing the regulatory role to frustrate and bleed the customers dry!

What they did in the power sector is now coming into the telecom sector where people pay for darkness at arbitrary and exorbitant prices. It shall not be tolerated by nigerians again. Enough is enough!
Whoever proposes this must be removed from the office! Once there is increase in data tariff, we must all protest not violently but peacefully. We must shun the companies, meaning nobody must subscribe to their data plan. If we can do it and stand our ground, within a period of three months he will be called to order. Let's all remember how the blacks boycotted the services of the white's buses in the US. It has worked and can still work and it will work in this situation. Remember that the companies need the money to maintain their network infrastructures and pay their workers.

  16. Where is it practiced in the world that a new company is coming into the market so the service charge must be increased to favour the new entrants. There is a minimum standard expected of any entrant into any market. If they don't have enough fund to compete favourable in the market they should quit and think of something else to do.

  17. Honestly i don't think far.

What we are currently in need of is better improved services at more affordable prices. Therefore if an investor has done his numbers, carried out an elaborate business plan and has discovered that he can't break even competing with the big names why venture into the business.

These mobile telecommunication companies you're forcing to increase their prices is indirectly saying go make more profit and still provide your normal crappy service.

What we need Mr. Minister is CHEAPER & DATA plan. Stop using your office to make money for these companies at the detriment of the common man.

  18. NCC be beefing MTN for long, slammed MTN billions for not updating customer info, while i have not registered my airtel, and glo lines up till now, auditing mtn account all the time looking for ways to milk them dry, and now the grand killer fatal blow, mumu mtn will gain and you will loss again cos people cant just stop using the network, thier lives and business revolve around mtn...
