Presidency raises alarm over imminent famine in Nigeria from January, 2017

The Presidency on Monday raised the alarm over imminent famine in Nigeria from January 2017.

According to a statement made available to journalists, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, raised the alarm in an interview he granted a Kano-based radio station on Monday.

Shehu said despite being Africa’s largest producer of cereals and grains, Nigeria risks famine from early next year following a huge demand in the global market that is targeting the country’s surplus production.

“The huge demand for our grains in the global market is creating an excellent environment for the mindless export of Nigerian grains across our borders and unless this is curtailed, Nigerian markets will be bereft of food by January next year,” he said.

The presidential spokesman said the Ministry of Agriculture has advised President Muhammadu Buhari on the need to draw the attention of all Nigerians to the issue which, if not addressed promptly, could lead to a shortage of grains by January.

“Over the past year, providence has blessed Nigeria with a bountiful harvest of grains, more than enough to feed the country and to export to other countries.

“At present, there is a high demand for grains from Nigeria, from African countries as distant as Libya and Algeria, and from places as far away as Brazil.

“However, the Ministry of Agriculture has raised concerns about a massive rate of exportation, which could lead to a shortage of grains in Nigeria by January,” he said. .

He explained that Nigeria currently enjoys a free market situation.

  4. Whoever is raising this alarm is a very stupid fool of the highest order. Every comment from the presidency lately gives more reason to doubt their ability to move our dear country forward...
This administration has been clamouring for diversification & Knowing that the world is in need of our gains, is this not time for the govt. of the day to invest more in the production of grain? or to encourage small & medium scale farmers to produce more, so we can bring in the dollars. These administration seem confused. #JustMyThought

  6. There is already hunger and malnutrition in the land. Al Jazeera has even captured the situation in one of it's news features. What you are telling us is that a lot of Nigerians will die of hunger and malnutrition before the next election.
By the this clueless wicked incompetent and useless APC government is through with Nigerians, those lucky to be alive will know that khaki no be leather. And all those trekking for Baba and APC will be free to trek to Ghana and Gabon if they can find food and strength to do so. Hahahaha! Nigerians sorry oooo! Pele! All those carrying broom the famine will not affect them. I learnt that what they should do is that they will paint the broom the colour of APC and enter their kitchen, close their eyes, raise the broom and then in a loud voice shout "sai Baba" three times then "chanji dole" three times and foods will just drop from nowhere for them to take the one they like and enjoy.
    Na the change be that!
    APC! Werepe change!
    APC! Kworshiokor change!
APC=All Promises Cancelled by All Political Criminals.
    Sai Baba!
    Sai Tinubu!
    Sai Rochas!
    Sai Daura!

  8. Yes there is famine already. The real reason is not export but the fact that most farmers can't go to farm anymore because of Fulani Jihadist herdsmen. Most farmers have been displaced and APC is happy about it. The mercenaries are openly accommodated in Nasarawa State near bother with Benue State. Only a few thousand naira paid to them is enough to wipe out a whole village. Buhari don't see any need to hunt or disarm them but he sees reason to disarm militants in Benue and Niger Delta who may want to fight for their people after government had abandoned them. I strongly believe 2019 is too far to flush this government out of power. Nigerians should act fast before they are totally wiped out by Saudi agents in Power
