Former Governor threatens to sue MTN over unsolicited messages and fraudulent deductions

A former military Governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (rtd), yesterday said he will sue MTN over unsolicited messages and fraudulent deductions by the telecoms giant.

He said he has briefed his lawyers to file a suit against MTN following the failure of the telecoms giant to attend to his complaints.

He said despite assurances, he started receiving unsolicited messages accompanied by deductions of money from his telephone line.

Umar released two of the unsolicited messages to the media. The messages, which he received on Saturday, were: “Laugh Out Loud” with a fee.

“Yello, you have downloaded the Callertune by TK SWAG for N50.00. This tune expires on 2016-12-09. To delete the tune, send del0733736

“Dear Customer, you have successfully subscribed to Laugh Out Loud and N50.00 deducted from your account. Your service will be renewed on 2016-11-18. To cancel, text STOP LOL to 55006. Enjoy!

Umar said MTN had no right force messages he never requested on him.

He said: “It is unfortunate that this practice has continued despite complaints. It is not about the N50 being deducted from his account.

“It is fraudulent to deduct money from subscribers without their consent. He said if you multiply N50 by 70milion subscribers, for example, it means the network is stealing billions of Naira from subscribers on a daily basis.

“If N50 is multiplied by 70m for instance, the sum is N3.5billion, for instance.

“I am suing MTN on behalf of 70million subscribers and I believe the subscribers will be my witnesses in court. I have briefed my lawyers accordingly.”

Umar said all his attempts to reach the telecoms regulator, NCC have failed.

  2. Well said! I have on several occasions complined of this unhealthy issues of unwanted deductions tom my credit account, not by my request but rather on network providers as mtn and others. This is an urgent matter to be looked into as costomers no longer have control over control of credit on individual rights. As a matter of fact, these network provides encourage their employees to commit great frauds never witnessed before. Where do we go from here?

  3. This is only a small branch of the fraud mtn specialise in. Go and see first hand how they treat their staff. Contract staff without benefit and Inhumane treatment.

  4. Col. ensure that you put me as your number 1 witness and victim. MTN is actually fraudulent.I am tired of these unsolicited text messages. I might also consider suing them myself.
