David Moyes lauds Victor Anichebe

Sunderland boss David Moyes has heaped plaudits on Victor Anichebe for the Nigerian’s contributions since claiming a starting role at the club.

Anichebe who has scored thrice in his last two games for the Black Cats is expected to partner Jermain Defoe in Saturday’s Premier League clash away to Liverpool at Anfield.

The pair have scored five goals in the last two games for Sunderland.
“Anichebe has done well and he is a good player but let’s put it in context, he is not a £20m forward,” Moyes said during his pre-match conference on Friday.

“In him we have a centre-forward who I believe in and who is very capable, but there will be games when he is in top form and games when he is not.”

Moyes who snapped up 28-year-old former West Brom forward Anichebe on a free in September also praised Defoe for his efforts.

“They have done well, we have been really pleased with them both. Victor is a good player and Jermain’s record speaks for itself with his goals,” the former Manchester United manager added.

Moyes who is used to going up against Liverpool in big matches with Everton and Manchester United is hoping to continue his side’s improved form that has seen them win the last two games.

“It has always been tough going to Anfield,” said Moyes. “They have always had good teams and I had periods at Everton where it was difficult to beat them. Fortunately in my last couple of seasons at Everton we finished above them in the league.

“It’s been a hard place to go, they are a really good football club with fantastic players over the years.

“All I can say is we won last week against Hull City, and after a couple of good victories we will look to do the same again.”

Sunderland are currently 19th on the log and face an uphill task against Liverpool.
