Reps approve establishment of state police in 36 states

The House of Representatives Tuesday approved the establishment of state police in the 36 states of the federation and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The approval of state police was contained in a bill seeking to alter Section 214 of the constitution to provide for establishment of state and community police in the country which passed second reading in the House. The Bill also seeks to replace the word “force” with “service” in its nomenclature.

Speaking in his lead debate, the Sponsor of the bill, Dada Awoyele, said that there was urgent need for an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to allow the government establishment of a State Police in all the States.

According to him, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as presently constituted was highly centralized and very far away from the people, adding that the alteration had become necessary given the rate of insecurity in the country.

  1. Joke of the century. Governors cannot pay teachers salaries and you want them to have their police. This people want to throw Nigeria into choas. Now people are complaining about how corrupt the police can be and you want a police that is under the state governor? Election then will be war? And those with money and political spine will be above the law in the states. Crime will increase.
Nigeria don suffer for this people hand.

    1. You belong to old school, you are like someone who adopts a strategy which shuns out poor outcome but failed to change the strategy but expecting better performance. Foul! At this age and time in a Federation state police is the best option for an improved security system. Federal Police shall provide specialised support like FBI

    2. Nigeria cannot manage state police. State governors will only use it as a way of employing their village brothers and perpetuate themselves in power. Even with Federal police, we saw what the emperor of Akwa Ibom did. Already, the de facto police headquarters is in his village.

  2. Am very happy that state policing has gotten some level of support as this will help create jobs for more youths, allow all states protect their territory better owing to the fact that all states have unique security challenges. This still comes at a great cost. That governors don't hijack dis as their personal tool for unleashing terror on opponents.
