Hansa Rostock fans attract criticism after showing Osama Bin Laden banner on 9/11

Disgusting: Hansa Rostock fans displayed an Osama bin Laden banner on 9/11

German club Hansa Rostock have attracted a large amount of negative attention, as their fans displayed a hugely distasteful banner over the weekend.

On Saturday, on 9/11, Hansa Rostock drew 1-1 away at Aalen in the German third tier.

In a crazy move, the Hansa fans unfurled an Osama bin Laden banner during the game.

Robert Marien, Hansa’s president, has told Bild the Bin Laden banner was “an utterly tasteless and stupid gesture”.

According to an article on Goal.com’s Italian edition, Rostock was heavily bombed by the Americans during World War II “and this explains the hatred” from the locals towards the US.

Whether you buy that is another question altogether.

Hansa Rostock  are set to be punished for the behaviour of their fans.

It’s likely that they’ll have their fans banned from games in respect of the Bin Laden banner.
