300-level student confesses to cheating in WASSCE, withdraws from UNILORIN

Authorities of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State on Sunday said that they had accepted the voluntary withdrawal of a student, Jephtaph Abolarin, from the institution.

Abolarin, a 300-Level Sociology student, had written to the university confessing to cheating during his West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

Abolarin, who claimed he had become a ‘born again’ Christian, said continuing his university education, using an unmerited certificate was unjust and immoral.

He wrote the letter to the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Sidiqat Ijaiya, on August 5, 2016.

According to him, he wanted to withdraw from the school because he got his WASSCE through examination malpractice.

Reacting to the letter on Sunday, the university Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, confirmed the withdrawal of the student.

Akogun, who noted that the Senate of the university had accepted the withdrawal letter, added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, commended Abolarin for his repentance and sincerity.

The VC, Akogun added, wished Abolarin well in his future endeavour.

Part of Abolarin’s letter to the DVC read, “Just as a house that was built on a faulty foundation will surely collapse, it is also certain that a career that is built on a faulty foundation will definitely collapse. All through my secondary school days, I was just a church ‘goer’, without genuine salvation and the fear of God. As a result, I got my WASSCE result through examination malpractice.

“By the grace of God, now, I have encountered the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which called for repentance and restitution.

“Sir, with deep conviction, I have realised that there is no point building my academic career on a faulty foundation; since the WASSCE result I got through malpractice is the basis in which my admission into this university was anchored.

“Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from the university and start all over again.”

  2. Good for u Mr Abolarin. But I'd like to remind u that Jesus used to say 'go and sin no more'. In life u can't undo every mistake or write every wrong. U only need to confess your sins and move on and determine not to repeat the same mistake or go back to your sinful ways. What's next, u remember u cheated in primary 6 common entrance examinations, are you gonna go back to rewrite that? Common sense and pragmatism must prevail in everything we do in life including religion.

  3. John 8:6-11..When a woman caught in adultery was brought to Jesus for his opinion. He looked at them and said let he without sin cast the first the first stone. He went on and say to the woman. "I condemn you not. Go and sin No MORE".
That is the message of Jesus christ. Repentance and moving on. Not going back in time and trying to correct your wrongs. Once the father has forgiven u he wants u to move on from ur sinful ways and never look back but live in pure righteousness. Withdrawing from the uni in an attempt to make things right is a folly decision and very unnecessary. God has forgiven u and u should forgive urself too.

  4. That is what a genuine encounter with Jesus Christ does in the life of a repentant sinner. Christianity is not an ordinary religion, it is living a transformed life after an encounter with Jesus Christ. Religion only tells you your sins but Christ forgives you your sins and empowers you to overcome sin. To the members of the university authority that are still steaaling govt money, what you need is an encounter with Jesus Christ.

  5. Pls friends let's not unjustly attack the brother. We need to know also that restitution is Biblical. In an event where a repentant soul feels led to restitute I think its not only proper but also as a mark of obedience to what I believe the voice of the Holy Spirit. However, I equally agree that we can't restitute all things. So simply obey the voice of the Spirit if you are sure he is leading you. "For as many that are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God" ........peace!

  6. U have done the best thing and God will honour u.
I remember taking book from our school library as janitor in those days, I packed all the books and returned them to the school after I met Jesus.
Call me any name, I was relieved afterward.

  7. There are things u cannot undo and there are things u can undo, this certainly is one of those u can undo. Today we hear of houses that collapsed in different parts of the country with people trapped in the rubbles, if I may ask, what is the cause? Simply because somebody merely decided to "move on" with the construction work irrespective of the fact that he/she knows that there is something fundamentally wrong with the structure. He only decided to undo the error and settles fora "timed disaster". The woman caught in adultery never denied before the Lord and she like the samaritan woman went her way telling people that although I was an adulterer, I sin no more.

  9. 1Cor. 1:18 says "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God". Restitution is a requirement for every born again Christian. Any Christian who says he has met Jesus and still keeps the goods he unjustly acquired is telling a lie - he has not repented. The woman caught in adultery didn't retain any article or subdtance she was still profiting from. In Acts 19:19, a major sign of repentance was the burning of books that were their source of income before they repented. Zacheaus paid back every body he previously cheated when he repented. If your conviction is strong enough you can go as far back as primary school, it's about the weight you put on the God that gave the command.
