The Independent National Electoral Commission has revealed that 30 political parties would take part in the Ondo State governorship election, coming up on November 26, 2016.
Some of the prominent ones among the political parties include the Alliance for Democracy, the Social Democratic Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Peoples Redemption Party, the All Progressives Congress and Accord Party.
Others are the Labour Party, the Citizen Popular Party, the Peoples Party of Nigeria, the Allied Congress of Nigeria, the National Conscience Party and the Unity Party of Nigeria.
The INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr. Segun Agbaje, made this known while speaking with journalists in Akure, the state capital, on Tuesday.
The commissioner said all the 30 parties had concluded their primaries before Monday, September 19, 2016, which was the deadline given by the commission to conclude all parties’ primaries.
He said the commission was adequately preparing to ensure that the election was conducted in a free and fair atmosphere.
He added that the commission would make use of technology to smoothen the process of the election.
He said, “The commission has commenced an aggressive, persistent and sustained voter education, mobilisation and public enlightenment campaigns in order to create necessary public awareness for the election.
“Essentially, the voter education campaigns are geared towards preventing voter apathy and to appeal to the citizen to shun violence before, during and after the election. “
However, the commissioner did not mention the names of candidates of the parties that would participate in the election, as he said the candidates’ names would be revealed by the national headquarters of the commission in Abuja on October 26.
Agbaje also declared that the commission, in conjunction with the security agents in the state, would ruthlessly deal with anybody caught disrupting the electoral process before and during the forthcoming governorship election.
“It is pertinent to indicate that if we must eradicate electoral vices, electoral offenders must always be punished to serve as a deterrent to others, “ the REC stated.
