Electricity: FG promises to generate 6, 000 megawatts by Dec 2016

The Federal Government has promised to generate 6, 000 megawatts by December 2016 based on the measures put in place to achieve maximal supply of electricity to consumers in the country.



This was stated by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola during a visit by delegates from the International Monetary Fund, IMF, in his office.

The Minister who was represented by the Minister of State Power, Works and Housing, Hon Mustapha Shehuri, maintained that the Buhari-led administration will not rest until it achieves the target of power generation, address infrastructural decay in the sector and a sustainable economy.

He also acknowledged that the country a population of over 160 million people has a severe challenge of infrastructural decay and deficiency and traceable to endemic corruption over the years by past administrations.

According to the Minister the government through its unveiled Road Map to Power will tackle the decay of infrastructure via a holistic approach.

“We are expecting that our generating capacity will be over 6, 000 megawatts by end of 2016, 10, 000 in 2019, and 30, 000 megawatts in 2030, and as planned within the maxim of incremental, stable and un-interrupted power”, he stated.

The Minister further assured that with the recent steps taken by the government to harness the abundant solar energy in the country by the signing on the Power Purchase Agreements, PPAs, with 14 companies in nine states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

  3. Nawa o,who says I should stop wailing?we are August already and Fashola is promising 6000 megawatts? From where?dry season is on his way,no gas and fuel self so how will Mr super minister vet it,I hope dis is not for campaign against election in Edo and Ondo?Nigerians beware of what APC is promising us o cos non of their promises has manifested.

  5. Mr Fash, 6000mw is too small I believe we can have more than that in Dec. If all of you so called ministers stop gallivanting around, stop stealing, get busy and properly perform your duties. I don't ever think that vandals are wiser than you.......that is if the vandals are not your tools in the first place. #God save Nigeria.
