Nigerian team visa denial: Spanish embassy did not consult us – NAPTIP

Even as the dust raised by the refusal of the embassy of Spain in Nigeria to issue entry visas to the country’s contingent to the FIBA U-17 World Championship in Zaragoza is yet to settle down, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP) said they had no hands in the denial.

Acting Director General of the agency, Alhaji Abdulrazak Dangiri told a press conference at the weekend that contrary to reports in a section of the media that the Spanish embassy allegedly claimed that its action was based on ‘reliable information of human trafficking’, it did not have any form of communication with the embassy.

Umar, NBBF President Dangiri further stated that part of the mandate of NAPTIP was not to issue travel visas to intending travellers, but only gives clearance based on specific requests from relevant bodies.

“The records we have in the agency does not support this position of the embassy. NAPTIP has no hands in this unfortunate incident.

NAPTIP did not receive any letter from the Spanish embassy seeking clearance for the platers and officials and therefore, never wrote the embassy on this matter.” The Director General however revealed that the Nigeria Basket Ball Federation (NBBF) in a letter signed by its Secretary-General, Okeke Patrick N received on June 8, requesting for the assistance of NAPTIP in securing the entry visas for the contingent to the tournament that was to hold between June 22 and July 3.

According to Dangiri, NAPTIP mandated an officer to handle the matter and he made calls to the NBBF scribe requesting him to visit the agency to brief them further on how to come in but nobody from the federation came.
