Ondo council of Obas condemns Eze Ndigbo title in South-West

The Council of Obas in Ondo State has said that the title of Eze Ndigbo in the South-West is a calculated attempt to embarrass the Yoruba traditional rulers and desecrate their traditional institution.

A communiqué issued by the council in Akure after its monthly meeting described the trend as “an affront on the state traditional rulers.”

They, therefore, stated that the title should be prohibited in the state and that there should not be any Ndigbo chieftaincy title for leaders of Igbo or other ethic group in the state.

It said that the use of titles such as Eze, Igwe, Obi or any other synonym is not acceptable in the state and that the only chieftaincy title that would be recognized is the one bestowed by the traditional ruler in the state on Igbo indigenes such as chairman or president or leader of Igbo indigenes.

The Communiqué noted that efforts had been made in the past by several Igbo leaders residing in the state to assume the Eze Ndigbo title but such moves have always been resisted.

The Obas declared: “The continued use of Eze Ndigbo chieftaincy title and flaunting of paraphernalia of Ndigbo traditional institution in Ondo State is a calculated attempt to embarrass the Yoruba traditional rulers.

“It is also meant to desecrate the Yoruba traditional institution. It is also an affront on Ondo State traditional rulers.”

The Obas said that the issue of Eze Ndigbo chieftaincy title in Ondo State, which is the title of traditional rulers in Igbo communities, is alien to Yoruba and tradition.

“It is a way of arrogating to the Igbo leaders the traditional power and equating themselves to Yoruba Obas.

They said that it is forbidden under the extant Chiefs Law for any person who is not a recognized Oba in Ondo State to wear a crown, costume or any other paraphernalia of an Oba.

“It is an infraction of the penal law and indeed the Chiefs Law in Ondo State for any person to parade himself as either a minor chief or recognized chief without the requisite approval of the prescribed authority or the State Executive Council as the case may be,’’ they said.

The Council therefore warned that; “Whoever wants to be a traditional ruler among the Igbos or any other ethnic groups should go to his domain for such dispensation.

  3. It is good, they are biting more than they can chew. Who can do in their domain as they do in our domain. We are much tolerant in Yoruba Empire.Thats why they want to become governor in Lagos. It is better to cut their nails. No absolute Freedom . One should not ride on one Nigeria to encroach on people land.

  4. Guys, let's keep things in perspective here. They just want to have a traditional representative of igbos in and area. Ok maybe they should come up with another title. Unlike with how fulanis colonised llorin and created a fulani emir king there, the igbos surely do nit have such plan.

  5. What Yoruba race is saying about Igbo allowing them have Obama in East shows they don't leave their domain to any other place. Let them ask the Hausas if they don't have their Sariki at Onitsha. This tribalism is causing them a lot of problem. They have similar religiocultural lifestyle with Hausas yet their tribalism can't allow them to accept the Hausa as their equals unlike the Ignore that's completely different from Yoruba/Hausa stock. Lets divide this country along this religiocultural contingent for peace to reign

  6. And yet u all say that the ibos shouldn't be asking for biafra. Everyday in Nigeria we make more obvious the lines that divide us. We highlight our differences. Who remembers where they come from in the US? Does it even matter? I thought this news was hilarious. I read it as a comic relief, but the comments here show that of all the problems Nigeria is facing, traditional title of ibos has a high priority and should be dealt with urgently. Falling crude price can wait, devaluing naira can wait, unemployment can wait, as long as the ibo man does not bear Ezigbo nor wear paraphanelia, all will be well in Ondo and Nigeria as a whole. God bless us all.

  7. Oba of Lagos and his collègues should ban Nze Ndigbo title in Lagos and other south west states. Can anybody do that in Biafra région?

  8. Is there any law in the south east stopping the yoruba man from assuming any rank or wearing any paraphenalia or even building mansion? Why are the yorubas apprehensive even to the point of making it public knowledge. Please I can offer my 2 plots of family land in NAWFIA free for any yoruba to come and build mansion and answer OBA OF NAWFIA in Anambra state. In as much as I am not paying him tax what is wrong in that.

  9. Igbos are the only group that are so selfish in Nigeria. The arrogant nature they portrait does not allow them to see peaceful coexistence nigeria of the westerners. They term this as cowardice of the Yoruba's. . Northernal/ westerner dears not try what the Igbos are doing in other peoples domain. Igbos are neither here nor there, each time they cry of marginalisation at the same time they want to be part of the shearing. Better concentrate on the side that pays you better (Biafra or part of nation building) if you know you can stand alone please concentrate on pusuing that goal and stop asking for federal govt appointment or otherwise.

  10. @Anonymous 8:50AM, Igbos will never apologize to the yorubas for their boldness. Also, it is not our fault that yorubas are cowards.

  11. Some people are baseless in their reasoning! If the yorubas are so infuriated by the marked success of the Igbo, they should come out plain. Why have they not gone to attack the emir of Kwara State or is kwara state not a western state again? They knew their cowardice cannot match the violence of fulanis and they turned to the peaceful Igbo again. During election, they only turned to the Igbo because of their fear. Is it the fault of the Igbo that they are successful?
Did anybody forbid you from travelling? You always ask if the Yoruba can do that in Onitsha, is that not a shame to you that you cant muster the courage to travel outside your land? Or do we come to Yorubaland and beg one of you that we will sponsor you to come to Igbo land and become oba?
If you are industrious and courageous enough, you should have dared it.
Mind you, all of you obas should really be grateful to the Igbo for coming to develop your lands if not, maybe by now, you would have still been wearing only pants or even going naked, being bereft of any useful business ideas!
Because of the Igbo, your cities are now big business cities which brings much tax money to you and relevance before the federal government, yet are not thankful to the Igbo that made it happen, your mumu payback is to focus on immaterial issues. That is the height of insecurity and jealousy! Am disappointed

  12. I love it so some igbos who think that we are one Nigeria will no that we are not one Nigeria and some of them who don't believe in biafra you are on ur own

  13. Keep abusing Igbos. I they leave the southwest will be overun with kora and indians and colonised by elite fulani feudalists from the north as they will replace your oba with a fulani emir. They did it in Ilorin so you know. IF YOU HATE IGBOS SO MUCH PROTEST AND JOIN THE BIAFRA CAMPAIGN SO THEY CAN LEAVE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Let it be known that the majority of Yoruba are not cowards as some Igbos portray. If you are old enough to know the history of Nigeria, you will understand that the Yoruba race have always been very accommodating and highly civilized. This is why the Igbos capitalized on the open handedness of the Yoruba. Let the fact be known that the Fulani emirate at Ilorin was to be extended to Lagos that was the instruction advanced from Sokoto but the insurgent were distarbilized at Ogbomoso, Oyo State! It is just matter of time, surely the truth shall prevail when the Afonja family will rightly take over the reign at Ilorin! It is my prediction and sooner or later, alone or together, it must come to pass! The injustice that warfare had perpetrated in Nigeria will soon come to pass and it is then we all can shout for joy and peaceful coexistence. .
