NDLEA arrests Brazil-bound passenger with $34,000 in underwear

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a passenger for attempting to smuggle out 23 wraps containing $34,000 to Brazil.

This was contained in a statement by the Head, Public Affairs of NDLEA, Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Friday in Lagos.

The statement said the passenger, Ozoh Ikenna, was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, during the screening of passengers boarding Etihad Airways flight to Abu Dhabi.

It said the money was packed in wraps and concealed in Ikenna’s boxer shorts.

According to the statement, the NDLEA airport commander, Mr Ahmadu Garba, said the arrest was facilitated with the aid of a scanning machine.

“The wraps of dollars found on Ikenna were detected with the aid of scanning machine.

“We also conducted a follow-up operation where one Ogbo Emmanuel, who gave Ozoh the $34,000 was arrested,” the commander is quoted as saying.

The statement said investigation conducted by the NDLEA’s Assets and Financial Investigation Directorate revealed that the suspects were involved in the laundering of substantial amount of illicit drug proceeds.

“We were able to trace over N226m to one bank account belonging to the second suspect, Ogbo Emmanuel.

“The account name is Eternal God International Limited,” the head of the directorate, Mrs Victoria Egbase, is quoted as saying.

According to the statement, it was also discovered that suspected drug proceeds were regularly deposited in the said bank account by members of an international drug cell that smuggles cocaine from South America to West Africa.

The statement quoted NDLEA’s Chairman, Mr Ahmadu Giade, as saying that the Agency was strategically targeting criminal wealth.

  1. The moment I saw the headline, even without reading the whole story yet, my first impression was "the suspect must be an Igbo man". And I was right as always. For how long will these guys keep damaging Nigeria's name? Thankfully he was arrested right here on Nigerian soil. And they (Igbos) won't stop living in their delusion of "we are the light of the world" and threatening secession from Nigeria.
Do us all a favour, break away and give the rest of us a chance of rebuilding Nigeria's image.

  2. Criminal activity is bad enough but even dragging God's name into it? Imaging Eternal God international Limited! You people have no respect for the same God u claim to believe in.

  3. Not only the Igbos do criminal and funny things to make money in Nigeria here and elsewhere, other people do and even much more.A criminal is a criminal irrespective of tribe or nationity.

  4. I am saddened by the first commentator's way of trivializing this matter and calling it a tribal issue. I am Yoruba. An ijesha man from odun state. Though it is wrong to tribalism it, generally southerners are more involved in drugs business than northerners, not igbos. Senator Buruji is an Abeokuta man and he is representing some of my friends in the National Assembly. He is one of the top drug barons in Nigeria . Thank God he has been sacked from the Senate for stealing mandate.
However, I was expecting Igbo traders to be arrested for smuggling $ out of Nigeria to do their legitimate business because of the restrictions on saving and transferring hard currencies. I would still have sympathized with them but this one has no sympathy from me. He is a drug pusher and if you know what drugs do to our vulnerable youths you would want capital punishment back. May you never escape justice for naming the name of Christ in vain. Ooni bombe. Amen IJN - Babajide

  6. I am sick of this online newspaper editorial policy of not screening out any comment on negative tribal tones. It has affected the integrity of the commentaries

  7. Eternal Drug Ndigbo International Limited would be an appropriate name for the Drug Baron's bank account name

    1. I couldn't agree more. Those denying the obvious fact should watch out for more drug stories in the future associated with Ndigbo on this same platform(NE) and they would see for themselves then. Let's call a spade a spade.

    2. It is better to do DRUGs than Kill people for money rituals as the Yoruba do.
