Presidency scraps office of First Lady

The presidency has said that official portfolio was yet to be assigned to Aisha, the wife of president Mohmmadu Buhari, overruling what hitherto was known as “First Lady’s office”. Apparently renaming it “Office of the Wife of the President”, the presidency however stated that Mrs. Buhari would, for now, be saddled with women and youth related issues in the country.

The Presidency was reacting to allegations in some Nigerian media that the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has moved into the First Lady’s office in the Aso Villa.

Describing the allegation as totally false and fictitious, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said that even though there was absolutely nothing wrong with Mrs. Buhari making use of the office space reserved for the First Lady, she had not done so in her capacity.

Shehu stated that under president Buhari, the office shall be completely different from what obtained in the past, saying that the era of the First Ladies issuing oil wells and licenses was gone.

“President Buhari promised that there would be a clear difference between the role played by his wife during his tenure and that played by many previous First Ladies. “All that ostentation, ubiquitousness and arrogance we have come to expect from the office are over and done with. Change has come.

“The ideal platform from which she will be useful to Nigeria’s women and children is still being thought out. Once this has been concluded on, Mrs. Buhari’s role will become clearer to all Nigerians. There will be nothing shady or hidden about it. There will be no access to public funds. It will be purely private and voluntary”, he said.

The presidential spokesman recalled that the time Mrs. Buhari had to make use of the office was at the beginning of the present administration.

He added that the meeting during which she hosted the wives of governors was held in a section of the Villa’s banquet hall, not in the First Lady’s office. “Her only visit to that office was at the point of the take-over of the Villa by the incoming administration.

“Out of respect to Mrs. Buhari, the Sierra-Leonian First Lady, Mrs. SiaKoroma recently surrendered her position of head of Africa’s First Ladies to Mrs. Buhari, inviting her to take up the same seat which Mrs. Jonathan hurriedly handed over a few weeks to the handover of her husband’s government to President Buhari. Again, all these things are currently under consideration and no decision has been arrived at presently,” Shehu said.

  4. Office of the First Lady is a political appointment with official budget and all the grandeur. It's like having a female president.
Office of the Wife of the President clearly reduced the powers associated with the First Lady office and the usual grandeur. It clear attached the activities of the Wife to the President. So the independence is gone and waste of public funds is no more.

    2. Anonymous @August 22, 2015 at 11:35 AM- let me correct your grammar here: 'I am not surprised that most commentators here are young people who can't differentiate between the two types of titles. Sixteen years of PDP rule has reduced our youth to a point that they are unable to read between the line nor spot the difference'- You also need a lesson in English- presumably PDP rule also affected your English language skills. BTW, you can't blame PDP for everything that is wrong with Nigeria- Nigerians themselves too also need to take responsibility too- how many young Nigerians are willing to apply themselves beyond the classroom by engaging themselves in the real world? I have marked essays written by Nigerian university students and am often shocked by their poor articulation- you can't blame the government for that! Believe me, I grew up and was educated in Nigeria, encouraged by my parents to read and spend less time watching television or flicking through my mobile phone! There are exceptional Nigerian students out there achieving great things in a system saddled with poor performing students

  5. Thank you anonymous poster at 7:21am for clarifying this. I had to read between the lines of this article to try to deduce what exactly is the difference. Generally around the world it is the wife of the president who is known and serves as the first lady. A layman or an outsider should be able to understand and that difference was not established in this journalism. My question now is what will happen when Nigeria has a female president?

  6. There is no difference between the two based on there literal meaning. Moreover, the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria doesn't recognize the office of the first lady or the office of the wife of the president. hence the argument that the office of the wife of the president clearly reduced the powers associated with the first lady has no bases as long as the two offices do not derive their power from the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

    1. Thank you @11:37..Technically, both words or set of words are just semantics, and are not recognized in the constitution as PMB has correctly noted during his campaign.. Therefore, instead of bickering about the name, the constitutional thing to do is to totally dissociate the supposed office from the powers it has hitherto wielded!!!..

  7. Buhari wife needs to be careful. Donations to run her president wife office will surely come from individuals that were being chased by her husband for corruption. Even corporations sponsored by corrupt people will also donate money.

  8. I will suggest that the position of Minister of Women Affairs and Youth Development be reserved for First Ladies. That I think will douse tension and perhaps better the lot of our women since the First Lady can easily lobby the Hubby for goodies for her office and invariably-our women.

  9. If you change six to half dozen, it is called change. APC go ahead with change. You can change Senate president to President of Senate or Senate leader. Change in progress " DO NOT DISTURB"
