Pastor Adeboye: “The Richest Man in the World”, By Femi Aribisala

Recently, a friend took me to the jewel-in-the-crown of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, a glitzy parish called “City of David” in Victoria Island, Lagos. Displayed resplendently on a wall in the church-office is a design of their current building project, a 14 storey architectural extravaganza titled “Trinity Towers.”

Is Redeemed still a church or is it now essentially a business concern? The Trinity Towers project shows the lines are now totally blurred. Jesus warns: “No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and Money.” (Matthew 6:24). Nevertheless, this Tower of Babylon being built with church funds is designed both for the worship of God and for the worship of money.

The project is an appeal to crass commercialism; a blatant celebration of wealth. In this poverty-stricken Nigeria, the foundation of the building alone is expected to cost over 2 billion naira. Side-by-side with a 5,000 seat auditorium for church services are high-brow restaurants, cafeterias, indoor swimming pools, cinema halls, gymnasiums, retail shops, games arcades, lawn tennis courts, relaxation spots, and a helipad as the crowning glory. Of what relevance is all this “supermarket” in a church?

Anointing for carnality

A church-member, overwhelmed by the grandeur of it all, buttonholed me in the hallway. I did not know him from Adam, nevertheless, he held me hostage as he waxed lyrical about how the Redeemed Church was, to use his words: “taking over.” “We have already got the vice-presidency,” he said. (The vice-president of Nigeria is a Redeemed pastor). “Next we will get the presidency,” he continued; “and then we will get DSTV,” (a South African satellite television network).

The anointing for this pride of life flows right from the top. The General Overseer of the Redeemed Church is Pastor Adeboye. A few years ago, he decided he needed a billion naira without which his “work of God” could not be done. So he confounded the Christian faith by establishing a “millionaires club.” To be a member, you had to hand over a million naira to him in Jesus’ name.

Thereafter, he upped the ante by calling for a “billionaires club.” He announced that he would be building an auditorium that can only be described as “fantabulous.” It would be a ginormous three kilometres in length and three kilometres in breadth. This project is clearly more designed to get Adeboye into the Guinness Book of World Records than it is to get the members of Redeemed into the kingdom of God.

Pastor Adeboye
Declared Adeboye on that occasion: “We need 1 billion naira from ten people. If you are one of them, please see my personal Secretary after we finish today.” Who are those likely to have this kind of money to give in the Nigeria of today except those who have cornered public funds? Thereafter, an announcer sought to know the members of the church who were “willing to join hands with our Father in the Lord to build a new auditorium to God’s glory.”

Vanity upon vanity

The proposed auditorium is not to the glory of God. The proposed auditorium is to the glory of Adeboye. Adeboye’s project is reminiscent of Saul’s, who built a monument to himself. (1 Samuel 15:12). Nowhere in the entire New Testament was money ever collected for putting up a building. Money was only collected for the poor. The temple of God is no longer a physical building. The temple of God is now Jesus Christ.

Pastor Adeboye is getting increasingly carried away by vanity. I have a tape of a question-and-answer session he had with his church-workers a number of years ago in which he boasted that the time would soon come when, before anybody could aspire to be president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he would first have to talk to Redeemed Church. Nothing in the scriptures can be construed as suggesting this as one of the stated objectives of Jesus Christ.

A Redeemed church-member told me of another meeting he attended captioned: “A Day Out with the G.O.” It was a dinner for financial sponsors of one of the annual “Holy Ghost Festivals.” Pastor Adeboye boasted tongue-in-cheek on that occasion that the time would soon come when the Queen of England would plead to join Redeemed in order to work as an usherette. The audience reportedly responded with wild applause and shouts of “Amen.”

Richer than Bill Gates

At the just-concluded 63rd Annual Convention of the Redeemed Church, Adeboye declared that he is now richer than Bill Gates; widely acknowledged as the richest man in the world. He said: “I have houses in at least 188 countries in the world, where we have our churches, so I am richer than Bill Gates. Each time I visit these countries, my children would be struggling and saying daddy, come and stay with me.”

These “houses” don’t belong to Adeboye; they belong to Redeemed church. Knowingly or unknowingly, Adeboye distorts the gospel. Jesus says: “All who have given up home or brothers and sisters or father and mother or children or land for me will be given a hundred times as much. They will also have eternal life.” (Matthew 19:29).

However, Jesus words are spirit. (John 6:63). Therefore, his “houses” are entirely spiritual, while Adeboye’s are physical. Jesus does not make his disciples richer than Bill Gates. Instead, he says: “God will bless you people who are poor. His kingdom belongs to you! But you rich people are in for trouble. You have already had an easy life!” (Luke 6:20/24).

Adeboye continued: “If I announce here that tomorrow morning, I need a car to travel to the new auditorium, how many cars do you think would be made available to me by you my children? Those of you that do not have a car of your own, very soon, God will give you your own cars. So, I am appealing to you to become an incurable soul winner before you leave this convention ground and your cup will overflow.”

Anathema to Christ

This is nothing but the enticing word of man’s wisdom. Believers don’t preach the gospel in order to receive cars. We do because God commands that we do so.

Jesus had neither chariots nor horses. He had no lands and houses. Indeed, he warned a prospective disciple who wanted to follow him they would not be staying at the “Sheraton Hotel:” “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:20).

Jesus does not speak like Adeboye. He says: “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master.” (Matthew 10:24-25). Jesus’ example is anathema to Adeboye’s declaration that he is now the richest man in the world.

This is the word of Jesus the Adeboyes of this age choose to ignore: “It’s terribly hard for rich people to get into the kingdom of heaven! In fact, it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into God’s kingdom.” (Matthew 19:23-24).

  2. I can now see that Femi Aribisala has gone totally insane. You took on Buhari and lost flatly, instead of swallowing your bitter pills of shame and defeat, go and rest, you now want to take on an anointed man of God. This is not about being sharp-mouthed or utter display of fearlessness, but you are simply courting trouble that may not end on you alone but your unborn generations. Does this passage "Touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm" mean anything to you? Why not allow God to judge, or when and where did God confer on you the right (or privilege) to judge His servants? A word is enough for the wise!

  3. I decided to read him again but it seems to me that something is fundamentally wrong with this man. Are all these properties this man wrote about bonafide owned by Adeboye? When Adeboye says he has a million houses, cars all over the place, is he saying that they are his own properties to be inherited by the Adeboye family after him? This is another man of God who has a church. Is he jealous? Has he shifted writing evil about Bola Tinubu and Buhari whom he predicted will never again become the president of Nigeria? He needs to be advised to take his drugs regularly as predicted by his doctor.

  6. May God have Mercy on this man. He does not know anything about the "Kingdom Life". I wish he comes to know, then he would understand that Jesus became poor so we could be rich. He suffered so we don't suffer again. All that a man needs to do is; accept his sacrifice and suffering on your behalf. Christians are God's children. God has mansions in heaven (not just houses) that are decked with gold and a reflection of the sun, owns a city where the streets are made of gold, riches that are beyond human comprehension. And you expect His own children to live in poverty on earth? An Earth he owns and everything in it? It is lack of knowledge for people to think one must be poor to enter heaven. I pray God help you to have a taste of his riches. It is an aberration for Christians to be poor.

What this unfortunate Old man failed to understand is that Pastor Adeboye is not the founder of Redeem but Papa Josiah Idowu of blessed memory. Pastor Adeboye only assumed the position in Mid 70's and by the anointing of God on his life he grew the church to where it is now. Therefore, all project; properties; donations and monies goes to Redeems ministry, papa Adeboye is only on salary and goodwill of those whom he had made impact in their lives. 18. Ask one million Nigerians how to spend one billion naira and you will get one million different answers. The biggest threat the world is facing today called terrorism is the refusal to let you be you and me be me. We want to tell somebody how to run a church but we don't have the experience of running one. I don't know what is Femi's problem if a group of people with a common interest decide to pull resources together for a multipurpose project in the name of the God they believe in. One of the greatest edifice in Washington DC is built by the Freemasons. Infact all the Government institutions in Washington are laid out to form the Freemason symbol. Anytime a Church does anything significant, people who pretend to be Christians will form a community of Sanballat and Tobiahs. We see ten million different ways the money should have been spent. To the shame of this people, the greatest edifice in Bible days was the temple of God which was well decked with all kinds of precious stones recommended by God himself.
Let it be known to Femi and cohorts that right from the foundation of the world inspite of conflicting needs, GOD has always initiated the most imposing projects from the creation of the world, Noah's Ark, Temple etc.
I think Femi is blinded by African religious shrines as a symbol of spirituality and closeness to deity. That is not what the God of the Bible represents. In Bible days, one of the greatest project which David wished to handle was to take the Ark of the Lord out of tent to a befitting edifice. It will always be so even in eternity.

  22. 90 percent of the people who made comments above are either blind spiritual or very strong members of Rccg. For me I think the church has lost its perspective and is preaching prosperity instead of salvation and redeeming grace. The truth we don't want to hear is what Femi has analysed succinctly using one of the very commercialized churches in Nigeria. I advice that we critically appraise his message and not kill the messenger. Sincerely how many souls are our so called churches wining? If so many why are all the terrible things happening in our country? Religiousity is not spirituality, you can know all the scriptures there is to know, but id you do not have the spirit of Christ in you are to live the scriptures you are just another carnal man with the bible. So I expect all the church goers to hurl abuses, but ask your self if In defending what is obviously wrong with Christianity you would make heaven. Would a large edifice, sweet bar and hotels add to you space in heaven. Remember Jesus Christ said we should build our mansions in heaven not on earth. So who are we really following, Jesus? Well your guess is as good as mine.

A lot of people in the church today are not true followers of Jesus, the whole emphasis is on money!

Carnality becomes sin when it takes the place of spirituality in true worship. Every material thing on earth on earth is carnality. But when the carnal things are used to propagate the gospel of Christ it's righteousness

    3. The revelation knowledge is not about distorting the word of God. You can't go round the Word and distort it. God reveals His word to us at different level, this is why He is just. The word of God is so true, that in this last days men will be lovers of self rather than God! All I am trying to put across to you is that if Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith and He is. We must follow the example's set by Him. The things we see today are so different from what one reads in the scripture.

The House of God does not reside on Earth, neither do His people speak of earthly wealth as a gift from God. The treasures God refers to in the scriptures are spiritual and His wealth is not material either. Wake up, lest ye be led astray by man's wickedness that makes the work if his hands seem like that of God's.

That everyone does not agree with you, should not make you abusive. Check your conscience and ask yourself in truth if you die as you are, will you make heaven? Now you can lie to us, but you can't lie to yourself and God. I wish you all the best.

Anonymous 12:24PM see how you dey turn Bible Upside down.Mumu, Thou shall not judge that Thou shall not be judged .....for judgement is His relates to the judgement of who goes to heaven or hell. Afterall dont you Judge your children if they do wrong thing. Wont Judges even Condemn criminals? But when judges pass such judgement the judges often add "May God Have Mercy on your soul" .This is in recognition the right, sole right of judging who goes to heaven or hell is God's. So stop using the Bible to deceive and confuse people. Femi made very valid and cogent points here. This write up is one of the most interesting intellectual piece I have read in recent time. 37. The most gullible set of human beings on earth when it comes to matters of religion are Nigerians, including YOU and I.
Many of us shy away from the truth under the guise of "judge not and you shall not be judged". We don't even know the meaning of judgement in the first place but often quote it whenever salient issues on matters of faith are raised. Thesame YOU and I that are saying "judge not" on the Aribisala talks are the one condemning prostitution, gay union, etc and urging the President not to legalize them.

You like it or not (and you are entitled to your own opinion anyway) , the Church of today has grossly deviated from the teaching and principles of Christ as contained in the scripture. People no longer read the Bible. All they listen to now is their Pastors and GO's. Since there is no cross-checking of the teachings of those Shepherds with the actual teaching of Christ, many are led astray.

Little wonder we loot public fund and enrich ourselves, make huge donations in the Church and get blessed by our pastors who kept encouraging us to do more. Afterall, "
Christ became poor so that we can become rich". How you acquire the wealth is no longer the business of our pastors. In the church of today, corruption is no longer preached-against in order not to scare away the rich thieves in the congregation. God is surely watching all of us and the end will justify the means. For once, I appreciate Aribisala, thou not all his points here are right.

Yes, Mr. Aribisala may not be completely right but my question to the defenders of the 'greed/lust' that has crept into the churches today is- How many of the people that make donations in churches are Christians and Holy Ghost filled? Being 'fishers of men' remains more important that 'fishers of bread'

  41. For the 'judge not folks', read 1 Cor. 6:2 - "Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?". This means that we should not hesitate to exercise our sanctified (and Bible-informed) sense in dealing with matters. That said, in this matter, I have but one plea: Let us obey Christ, who said that we should love one another. In our thoughts, words and deeds, let's show love and also pray for one another. The path of the just shines brighter and brighter unto the perfect day - so if we walk in love, we should become more perfected (mature, holy) with each passing day. A brother may have been wrong yesterday and repented the very next moment. Let's cease to keep record of wrongs. Rather let us live by example and display good fruit. Jesus said, by our fruits we are known Matt 7:16. While Christ did not die to put money in your bank account, the Lord is your shepherd and he will provide for you. Christ gave His life to give you true riches (and btw for the folks who say he became poor that I may through His poverty become rich - take note that "true riches" are not denominated in dollars, naira or any currency of man. True riches refers to endowments of grace and benefits of sonship) So, brethren, let us seek to please God and receive true riches (and abandon the quest for material gain). Jesus said 'Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added'. In summary, Nigerian christians especially, let us shift our focus from seeking material wealth as our aim and rather seek to please God! Regarding your financial apprehension, if you work hard and smart, you will pay your bills, and have money even to give others. Have you seen the righteous forsaken or his children beg for bread? Never! Let's stop using God to your own ends, rather let Him be Lord of our Lives. Christianity is NOT about making money. It is about Christ being formed in us, that we henceforth live, not for ourselves (selfish desires) but for Him who loved us and gave Himself for us. See 2 Cor 5:15. God's grace abounds!
