Osun NYSC members lament unpaid allowances

Some members of the National Youth Service Corps in Osun State have lamented the nonpayment of their allowances for the whole year.

Some of the corps members said this in an interview with newsmen on Thursday, at the Osogbo Township Stadium where they were given their discharge certificates.

The corps members said the state was supposed to pay them N5,000.00 allowance per month and provide them accommodation but none of these was complied with.

One of the corps members, who served in Boripe Local Government Area, Mr. Timibofa Ayebanoah, told our correspondent that he and his colleagues were not paid anything since they started the service.

This kind of action could discourage corps members from discharging their responsibilities passionately.

Ayebanoah said, “We are still expecting to be paid. We are expecting to be paid 12 months. We have not been paid a dime since September last year but there is a rumour that the state government would pay us four months now but we are still expecting it.

“Although some states don’t pay their corp members’ allowance, but in a situation whereby you were already told that you would be paid and you were not paid, it is painful.

“At times, when you consider the way the state behaved towards the corp members by not paying any allowance, you tend not to put in your best when embarking on group projects assigned to you.”

Also decrying the action of the government, another corps member, Victoria Solomon, whose place of primary assignment was Osun State Broadcasting Corporation said “It is saddening and terrible. I didn’t collect anything from the state and I worked very hard at OSBC.”

Efforts to confirm from the media aide to the governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, were unsuccessful, as calls put across to his telephone were not answered.
