Buhari rejects United States gay marriage offer

Nigeria's president,Muhammadu Buhari has rejected the gay marriage offer by the United States of America, stating that sodomy is against the law of Nigeria and abhorrent to our culture.

The spokesperson of the president, Femi Adesina said that the issue of gay marriage was discussed during Buhari meeting in the US but he rejected the offer.

“The issue of gay marriage came up here yesterday. PMB was point blank. Sodomy is against the law in Nigeria, and abhorrent to our culture,” he posted on his Twitter handle.

Recalled that Nigerians have expressed fear that Obama might pressurized Buhari to sanction gay marriage in Nigeria in order to get the support of the United States.

Civil Society Organisations, also urged Buhari not to listen to the US government on issues of Gay rights, so as to protect the laws and values of Nigeria.

The fear among stakeholders ahead of Buhari’s US trip was that he could succumb to the US authorities’ pressure on gay rights.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan had in January 13, 2014 signed the anti-gay marriage bill into law.

The law prohibits gay marriage and same-sex relationships and prescribes a 14-year prison term for offenders.

Jonathan had defied western governments’ pressure urging Nigeria to respect gay and lesbian rights.

The law, which also proscribes membership of gay rights groups, was passed by the National Assembly in May 2013 but Jonathan had delayed signing it into law.

Two similar bills have been proposed since 2006 but failed to make it through parliament.

“Persons who enter into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union commit an offence and are each liable, on conviction, to a term of 14-year in prison.

“Any person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organisations or directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offence and shall each be liable on conviction to a term of 10 years in prison,” the law states.

  1. I had no doubt about your moral stand in this, even when people were so blind to think that you could give in easily to pressure from America, I had so much confidence in you as regard this; I can see why you went with the likes of Pastor Tunde Bakare for spiritual guidance God bless you Mr. President

  4. I can imagine how disappointed Obama must have been. The main reason Buhari was invited was to talk gay marriage. They and their devilish mentors have failed in the battle for the soul of Nigeria. Thank God.

  5. You are all hypocrites, the computer was invented by a Homosexual.
When you ask for medicines and weapons, did it not occur to you, homosexual men made these products

    1. They made those things as men blessed with intelligence by God. The fact that they are homosexual contributed nothing to the development of those things, so that premise is dead in the water.

You don't realise there were also groups asking for rights to mk love to children.... The uproar of the people is a sign of confusion no necessarily direction.. We were created man and woman else you won't even before alive to make that computer.. And why is the US President bent on selling this.. Nigeria has more dire issues to address.. Or are there some economic gains tied to it?

    4. Toni Blazing you failed to recognise the value of culture in Nigeria. Our culture is very dear to us. Our culture is built on our values which are based mostly on our religious leaning. All religions in Nigeria abhor sodomy as an abominable act. Therefore, the laws against sodomy in Nigeria is a natural course to protect our joint values.

It does not matter who constructed products and services. Our morality is defined in terms of our joint values, not in terms of products and services.

    5. Mr hypocrite above, so if homosexuals invented everything, does it mean we must make it law?

  6. Thank you for that reply. They were wise enough to produce the computer but not wise enough to know that gay is inhuman. If their father married a fellow man where will they be?
