Acting INEC chairman, Amina Zakari vows to improve electoral process

Amina Zakari, the acting Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Wednesday said she would continue to work toward the improvement of the country’s electoral process.

Mrs. Zakari was speaking during a brief handing over ceremony from Mohammed Wali, a National Commissioner, to her at the INEC headquarters.

Former chairman, Attahiru Jega, had on Tuesday handed over the affairs of the commission to Mr. Wali before the appointment of Mrs. Zakari by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mrs. Zakari said the successes achieved under the leadership of the immediate past Chairman of the Commission would be consolidated.

Mr. Buhari appointed Mrs. Zakari on Tuesday as the acting chairman of INEC following the exit of Mr. Jega, who had completed his five-year tenure on June 30.

“I accept this with humility and an added dedication to serve. We hope to see the continued improvement of the electoral processes in the country,” she said.

Mrs. Zakari prayed for God’s guidance to lead the commission until a new management was constituted, adding that INEC would not rest on its oars until it delivered the promise.

Earlier, Mr. Wali said it was his pleasure to hand over the affairs of the commission to Mrs. Zakari having taken over the affairs of INEC from Mr. Jega on Tuesday.

He assured Mrs. Zakari of his unwavering support, “If you succeed, we all succeed; if you fail, we all fail”.

He said that the commission had always, and would continue to work in harmony to promote the interest of democracy and the electoral process.
