Expectation of Nigerians too high, Rome was not bulit in a day – Buhari

President elect, Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, has told the All Progressives Congress governors-elect, that the expectation of Nigerians was too high hence the need to sensitise all to set realistic targets.

Buhari said this at a meeting with the APC governors-elect at Defence House, Abuja, on Monday.

He also lamented the poor state of the economy which has made it difficult for both the federal and state governments to meet their obligations to workers.

The President-elect was responding to pleas by the incoming governors for him to prepare a sort of bail out for states to enable them pay salaries.

Buhari said, “The expectation is too high and I have started nervously to explain to people that Rome was not built in a day.”

According to him, it is sad that the nation is grappling with security challenges while the economy is lying prostrate with most states unable to pay salaries in spite of the revenue we earned from 1990 till date.

He also said, “For this to be corrected, please give the incoming government a chance. Here, I will like to recall what happened during the Abacha regime which led to the emergence of PTF.”

The former military ruler recalled that, “The Abacha regime was a military regime and it thought that the only way was to increase the prices of petroleum products, but they were not taking Nigerians for a ride.

“They could have said if Nigerians decide too riot, they have the guns and so they can have their way. They decided to tell Nigerians that they were going to increase prices of petroleum products and the money we get, we will put aside for development. That was how PTF came.”

Perhaps in a veiled reference to what his administration is planning to do to mitigate the effects of the economic down turn, Buhari hinted at embarking on public enlightenment to galvanise public support for his economic policies.

The President-elect said, “This time around, under this system, to bounce back with the issue especially with the backlog of salaries which are of immediate concern to individuals and states, I think we should look for a better way to address the issue and think of how to persuade people to give us a chance to organise the economy immediately and get something to pay salaries.”

He reaffirmed his determination to give priority to securing the lives and property of Nigerians because according to him no meaningful development can take place without security.

  7. Sir, the solution to these problem is true federalism, no other way to it. The Nigerian state can be liken to a family of 12 children, 4 working and at month end gives their salary to their to dad to share to all 12. Certainly the lack would continue until they all start working. States should look inwards, States that can't sustain itself should be encouraged to merge with other nearby states with which the share similar culture to consolidate their strength . What is the use of having these much states that can't sustain itself.

    1. I seriously hope that this time around the elected officials will come down to the lowest level of the citizens and listen to all the inputs we can give. Certainly, Nigeria cannot be sustained with the huge recurrent budget we still operate today. There must be sacrifices made.

  11. Accountability will reduce corruption. If every state should manage their little resources without stealing, there will be reduced need.

PDP failed because there was no accountability and corruption took over every areas.

APC government can save money by reducing waste in spending, enforce the law to correct illegal behaviour and activities, tell Nigerians the truth about the problems affecting progress, listen to suggestions from Nigerians, improve security of people and property and secure oil pipeline from vandalism.

GMB promised to change Nigeria, free the nation from sindicates that have taken hold of our treasury, that GEJ lacks the stamina to deal with BH, I heard he said that BH will be thing of the past in 3months. Now the stories have changed, "our expectation is too high, Rome wasn't built in a day" where are the GMB supporters? This is yet to takeover and his disposition has already changed..... When he eventually take over, just wondering

  16. In my candid openion, I wld suggest the following method to reduce the workload likely to affect the president elect's admin(Alhaji M Buhari): 1) the admin that owed such huge unpaid workers salary shld acct for what and what went wrong and culprints shld be held responsible to make such refunds. Pls make sure you avoid carry-overs into your admin as I this'll cause a lot of set back for your government. 2) let there be lots of enlightenment program to get your ready to serve in sincerity and accountabity and afterwards dividend of the gain of honest will be shared amongst all of you. 3) maintainance culture shld be absolute rather than abandoning already embarked project for new ones. 4) pls take it upon yourself visit every area in the four corner of the for an up-date progress. Pls do so unceremonously for acuracy. As you are aware, Nigerians prefer's eye service for an impression and not for dignity. I believe with these little hints something positive is going to have its way into the progress of your administration by God's grace.

  20. I dont see any reason why most of us are ranting, the guy did not say anything bad, it will take time for security issues to be handled in Nigeria, it will take time to develop the Nigerian economy, it will take time for our infrastructures to be put in place, same goes for the educational sector and other institutions...Nigeria did not get to this terrible state in one day, so it will take time, we have to give this new administration some time, after all PDP had 16yrs and did absolutely nothing. this is not about GEJ, its about our great country NIGERIA. Some states are still owing salaries for over 5months now, this administration will have to work on that, its not going to be an easy ride for them, so lets give them a chance simple.....Its not about APC supporters like someone said. use your head man.

    1. Sharap ya mouth. I did vote in the last election, but campaign promises are bonds. Many were swayed by these promises. He knew the problems in the country. He has shown his insincerity. He could have qualified his promises. If he had said for instance that he will fight to ensure that the naira appreciates in value. Nigerians would still vote for him by that promise. Instead, " I will make the naira equal to the dollar". That alone would have cost him that election if the crowd who voted, voted not on sentiment. He deceived Nigerians. Don't make excuse for him. And am sorry for my initial outburst

  22. It should clear to us all that the APC is the real clueless one. During their campaigns, they made it clear that they understood the problems of Nigeria and had ready solutions to them. They're yet to take over but they're jittery already. We need the promised CHANGE. I can bet one thing,We're going to ask Jonathan to come back after four years of We aren't talking of sin,we're talking of being gay. There wouldn't have been the need for God to make the woman if he wanted man to be gay. The only thing you can get out of being gay is filthy fun. You'll ejaculate the same way you will if you were scr*****g a woman but no other natural phenomenon can be produced. If your father didn't have to do it with your mother, there wouldn't have been you. If only you can show us that person who was born of parents of same sex without the involvement of the opposite sex then, you'll have all my support, otherwise you need to hide your face in Shame and shut your trap. This is nothing but INSANITY.the '419 CHANGE'
