BUHARI VICTORY: 'We should be celebrating rather than mourning' - Jonathan tells PDP

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said despite his defeat in the hands of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of the All Progressives Congress in the last presidential election, the Peoples Democratic Party should be celebrating rather than mourning.

In his statement after the announcement of the election result, Jonathan said the PDP should be rejoicing because it had, in the last 16 years, steered the country away from ethnic and regional politics.

He said, “To my colleagues in the PDP, I thank you for your support. Today, the PDP should be celebrating rather than mourning. We have established a legacy of democratic freedom, transparency, economic growth and free and fair elections.

“For the past 16 years, we have steered the country away from ethnic and regional politics. We created a Pan-Nigerian political party and brought home to our people the realities of economic development and social transformation.

“Through patriotism and diligence, we have built the biggest and most patriotic party in Nigerian history. We must stand together as a party and look to the future with renewed optimism.”

The President thanked all Nigerians for the opportunity given him to lead the country.

He assured them that he would continue to do his best at the helm of national affairs until the end of his tenure on May 29.

Jonathan disclosed that he had conveyed his personal best wishes to Buhari and prayed that God continue to bless Nigeria.

While thanking Nigerians for turning out en-masse for the March 28 elections, he said he had kept his promise to bequeath the culture of free and fair elections to the country.

He added that he had also expanded the space for Nigerians to participate in the democratic process, saying that is one legacy he would like to see endured.

Jonathan said although some people have expressed mixed feelings about the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, those who might feel aggrieved should follow due process based on the constitution and electoral laws in seeking redress.

He added, “As I have always affirmed, nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. The unity, stability and progress of our dear country is more important than anything else.

“I congratulate all Nigerians for successfully going through the process of the March 28th General Elections with the commendable enthusiasm and commitment that was demonstrated nationwide.

“I also commend the Security Services for their role in ensuring that the elections were mostly peaceful and violence-free.”

  14. God bless U GEJ, u are truly a peaceful man. We all know that if GMB hadn't won, there would hv been a serious fight now especially in the north where those idiots will b killing innocent souls and non hausas. Like they said, they would have made the country un-governable. But God seeing what would hv happened averted it by using u as a sacrifice to bring peace cos He knows His pple cannot start up a fight like those devils. U will alwaz be remembered for this peaceful act of democracy. The true democratic man. And now let's c what happens to Boko haram, whether they will stop or cont. If they stop that means it's obvious GMB knows abt their existence. Cos they started as soon as they lost d previous election to GEJ. Now they have won, what will happen....?

    1. This comment of yours is so unnecessary as it is filled with bitterness and hate. It shows that those people that started the post election mayhem in the north in 2011 were not mobilized by the candidates but bitter supporters like you who do not believe that this country should be united. President Jonathan had the heart to do the needful by congratulating GMB and your here expressing your baseless bitterness. It was an election my friend and someone have to win it. If the President that contested and lost had the heart to accept it, why can't you just accept and let's all move on instead of making suppositions. This country is owned by us all and we must all be ready to make sacrifices for the country's unity. Oh, BTW, I'm from south south

    3. I'ma break it down 4 u and make u see why I have no respect 4 ur uncle Jonathan. Even tho, it is a no brainer frm the state of affairs in our society but bcos pple like u with a tiny half functioning brain can't understand, I will mention just few of his so called mistakes: under Jona's watch  $20 billion oil money disappeared. When the whistleblower, Lamido Sanusi raised the alarm, instead of getting praises frm the president he got sacked.
Under Jona's watch, okonjo-iweala mismanaged 20trillion naira when the infrastructures are in a rotten state, no refinery was repaired throughout his administration, I could  go on 4 ever.  These are what ur tiny, malfunctioning brain tells ur mouth to call mistakes. In advanced world where true governance takes place they won't call it mistakes but gross misconduct, and being unfit and incapable to run a country. But since here in Africa things like these are commonplace and are referred to as mere mistakes. U, Abayomi have been used to and programmed to settle for crumbs and thus, u are dishing out cheap praises and accolades to any acts of mediocrity by ur so called leaders.
Did I hear u say "mistakes" again? fool. LOL

    4. This your comment shows you are an illiterate in mind or in exposure. There is no missing $20 billion. The NAS prove said so and PWC also confirmed it. For your information, you need to stop believing all that your supposed leaders says cause experience has shown that dome of them dont know more than u thats if u are a sharp person. You need to also know that okonjo can not mismanage N20 trillion cause all earned revenues are shared to all tiers of govt federal, state, local govt, NAS and judiciary.

  16. Are you saying God made GEJ lose the election to avoid the northerners from invoking violence? Or is it that The General won the heart and minds of Nigerians and enshrined in the fabric of Nigerian Democracy the definition of the people, by the people and for the people?

The General did well. Kindly avoid such comments as even the Former President as accepted the results.

    God bless Nigeria.

    1. the first was it. There is nothing special the general has done to win anybody's heart other than that the people were tired of GEJ's leadership period! Lets stop overcelebrating the general's victory and start celebrating GEJ's victory in enshrining true democasy, transperency and free and fair elections which non of the past presidents (Including Mr incorruptible OBJ) could not do.

    2. What is to be celebrated about GEJ conceding defeat and congratulating the winner. President Jonathan only did the right and wisest thing by accepting the outcome of the poll.

  23. Kenneth, the most important thing is that GEJ has given the people the true power PDP uses as their slogan through the free, fair and credible election. The change is not in support of GMB but to make sure the leaders know ppl can always vote them out if they don't perform. I commend GEJ's magnanimity and courageous act to prevent northern bloodshed. Do you know how many Christians would have lost their lives if Jonathan has won or gone against the electoral process. Kudos GEJ! Kudos to our Democracy.

Stop expressing your hate towards NIGERIA. come out of your past and join the rest of Nigerians to build a united nation. Your voting pattern shows that even younger generations are still leaving in their past and holding on to 45years old stories told them by Grandpa.
GEJ you were not really bad but surrounded by thieves. You won my heart yesterday.

  29. GMB has contested and ost thrice. And he never congratulated the winner? Fayemi congratulated Fayose even when he had to go to court later. GMB never congratulated OBJ in 2003, never congratulated Yar'dua 2007, and never congratulated GEJ in 2011. He has a bitter heart. His body language has always be the cause of destruction in the North if we say he does not mobilized them for destruction.

  30. Why are the Igbos hurting more than the south south region? Can you cry more than the bereaved? They almost chop my ear off in the office today. I am from PH but i am taking it cool like GEJ

  31. GEJ, the usual pathological portrait of a Wolf in Sheep Clothing.

In my humble opinion and assessment, GEJ was snookered into quickly conceding defeat.

All glory, honor and thanks to Almighty God for the wisdom, composure and manner in which Prof. Jega handled Elder Orubebe, making the evil scheme of GEJ and PDP to seriously backfire.

GEJ was forced to quickly concede defeat knowing fully well that he can never be exonerated from the shameless manner (which for the records, GEJ has never officially rebuked to this day) that Elder Orubebe portrayed our dear Nation Nigeria.

Let it be known to all well meaning Nigerians that as we speak, GEJ has not in his private or official capacity dissociated himself from the public shameful behaviour of Elder Orubebe.

By this, I really wonder whether majority of Nigerians have not lost the sense of knowing what is truly right and wrong.

May the good Lord in His infinite mercies complete the deliverance of Nigerians and Nigeria at large in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ, Amen and Amen.
