Jonathan denies spending ₦2 trillion on election campaign

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has denied spending N2 trillion for electioneering campaigns for his Peoples Democratic Party in the recently concluded general elections.

The presidency stated this in an official reaction to a story published on Nigerian newspapers that Mr. Jonathan was concerned about how campaign funds were spent without the desired victory in the polls and has called for a probe.

In stating the president’s stance, his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, told journalists in Abuja that “The President has not set up any committee as alleged in that story. It is also not true that the Presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party used state funds, or spent N2 trillion during the campaigns.”

Mr. Abati, who did not disclose an official amount spent by the presidency for the elections, alleged that the story was meant to ridicule the president.

“We are particularly worried that since the March 28 and April 11 elections, some persons have continued to work very hard to diminish the Jonathan Presidency,” he said.

Mr. Jonathan lost the March 28 presidential elections to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC. The president’s Peoples Democratic Party also lost the majority in both chambers of the parliament as well as losing more state executive and legislative positions to the APC.

The story alleging that the Presidency spent a whopping N2 trillion on the 2015 General elections, and that a Committee of Five has been set up by President Jonathan to conduct an audit of how the funds were disbursed by party members and state officials is mischievous, false and embarrassing.

The President has not set up any committee as alleged in that story. It is also not true that the Presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party used state funds, or spent N2 trillion during the campaigns. The innuendoes are wrong-headed; the motives behind the story are suspicious.
The story alleges, for example, that the Presidency spent N2trillion on elections and embarked on a money-sharing spree to party members, support groups and state officials. The authors of the story and their self-appointed megaphones further insinuate that public funds were deployed in this regard. Their allegation of a theft of public funds is extremely malicious.

How much is the budget of the Federal Government of Nigeria? The annual budget of the Federal Government is a little over N4 trillion. The story is practically suggesting that half of the federal budget was spent on elections. This kind of reckless insinuation is meant to incite the public and instigate national crisis.

With FAAC having to do everything possible every month to ensure disbursements and with the Federal Government heavily committed to the war against terror in the North East, where is the alleged N2 trillion from the Federal purse? President Jonathan and the People’s Democratic Party conducted the 2015 elections in strict accordance with the rule of law. The suggestion of any unlawful conduct cannot be sustained under any circumstances.

President Jonathan has done his best to protect and strengthen democracy and promote peace. He justly deserves all the accolades that he has received from both Nigerians and the international community for this. Certain persons and interest groups may not be happy that his profile has further risen and that his legacy is assured; but they do their country gross disservice when they act so unpatriotically.

Anyone who is engaged in imposing a crisis on the country by any means is not being fair to Nigeria. We can only appeal to the public to be wary of such reckless tactics now on display, which form the substance of an odd, malicious campaign after the elections.

We are particularly worried that since the March 28 and April 11 elections, some persons have continued to work very hard to diminish the Jonathan Presidency. They need to be reminded that the time for politics is over; it is now time to focus on the in-coming government, with emphasis on national development and moving the country forward.

    2. Aside that OPEC release its financial figures showing that Nigeria made 14.45 trillion naira from crude oil in 2014.. Nigeria Customs also made about 3 trillions in 2014 according to their financial statements..... Mr Abati, if Nigeria annual budget is 4trillion, where is the balance or where does the balance goes to..? I want you to answer that question plessssssss..

  3. US $14.45b is equal to N2.9 trillion. OPEC does not quote in Naira. Where did PDP get 4 trillion? From which Federation account did they remove 4 trillion? And which Federation account has 4 trillion? I'm surprised at Nigerian's ignorance! APC really outspent the PDP in the elections, that is proven!

    1. Those of you trying to explain the fraud by making reference to money in the Federation account are naive. The moneys stolen by Diezani Allison-Madueke for PDP never entered the Federation account, and that is why NNPC's finances have remained opaque. NNPC has maintained an account with HSBC to which only Diezani Allison-Madueke is signatory. Moneys going into that account do not come from any Federation account but from the wheeling and dealing at source. (This includes selling of crude oil meant for the refineries while keeping the refineries paralysed.) That account has been maintained to fund PDP's election. In the wake of HSBC's recent scandal, the bank was ordered to close a number of Nigerian accounts. It is not without reason that the World Bank, curiously, called Buhari to probe NNPC affairs, even if he does not probe individuals. It also explains why Diezani is running helter sketer because she knows she will be in deep trouble. What did she go to discuss with Abdusalam Abubakar? A recent post in Facebook claims she has gone to return some billions of dollars to the government; I don't know how true that statement is, but there must be some fire for that smoke.

If Nigerians want to know, it was PDP's aggressive buying up of all Dollars in the market that crashed the Naira value so dramatically in the last 6 months. We all know that in the days leading up to the elections, PDP rained US Dollars - not Naira - on traditional rulers and people of influence to win the election. All that came from the dollar-buying frenzy. It will take a long time to repair the damage PDP did to the Nigerian economy through that exercise.

The incoming government of APC needs to know that if they too tow the path of looting of our commonwealth, we Nigerians will deal with them too. I voted for Buhari, not for any sentiment or party loyalty, but because I think he has the character that can clean up Nigeria. But if he allows looters to derail him, we will reject him, just as we rejected Jonathan. Four years is not too long a time to wait to reject an incompetent or dishonest leadership.

    2. Anonymous 7:49am, please go back to the presidential media chat which was held immdiately after the postponment of the election for 6weeks, GEJ stated there that it cost the federal govt so much money anytime he goes to campaign... although he did not state how much it is; I believe guys like you do not know that he is not suppose to use our money to fund his campaign, although nobody took him up on that!!! it is ridiclous for him to claim that he did not spend 2trn..." murder will out" one day #bringbackourgirls

    3. Anonymous 8:42am seems to know what he's talking about. From this informed posting, we can make out that:
      1) Our "common wealth" comprises moneys outside and inside the Federation Account (FA).
      2) Under Jonathan, Diezani Allison-Madueke was in charge of stealing money from outside the FA or, more correctly, cornering money so they do not get to the FA. She used the NNPC as the vehicle for this scheme.
      3) No amount of auditing of the FA will implicate Diezani in the looting. An audit of the FA may indict the Finance Minister - Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala since the looting could only have happened under her watch.
      4) The only way to catch Diezani is to look at moneys that never got into the FA. This explains why World Bank points to the NNPC as a body to probe.
      5) The equation is:
      $Stolen_By_Diezani = $Money_From_Oil_Sales - $Money_Into_Federation_Account

  4. I thought these GEJ supporters have learnt their lessons. GEJ didn't spend 2 trillion naira on his ill-fated re-election bid, please tell us how much he spent. Despite supporting him, GEJ in 2011, I was quick to notice his deceit, lies and insecurity. That was why I and most well meaning Nigerians worked against his re-election. Thank God we are done with this RUBBISH, WASTEFUL, DECEITFUL, VISIONLESS, CLUELESS AND "SHOELESS" GOVT. O.J
